Not long ago, Sony introduced an online store for users to buy digital games directly from there. However, it recently allowed gamers to not only purchase games and download them manually, but now it also allows them to remotely initiate downloads from that game, even though your PlayStation system will does not automatically turn on to do so.
Here is how it works.
Note: So far, the remote download feature has only worked for store account holders in Canada, the US, and the UK.

Step 1: Sign in to your PSN (PlayStation Network) account on the Sony PlayStation digital store. Once you’re signed in, go to the game you want to buy (or the demo you want to try), buy it, and follow the checkout process as usual.
Step 2: On Thank page after you check, go to the bottom where the game is listed and search Download to your PS3 button. Click it.
Step 3: Usually this should suffice, but since Sony (inexplicably) won’t let you remotely turn on your PS3 to download games, you’ll also have to make sure you’re interested in one of these the following:
- Your device is on standby and you are a member of PlayStation Plus. This way, your PS3 will start the game download at the time you specified in the settings for the automatic update to happen.
- If you haven’t subscribed to PlayStation Plus, your games will automatically download the next time you turn on your PS3.
Once downloaded, your game will be installed and ready for you to play under the interface Game section on XMB.
PlayStation Vita
To download games to PS Vita remotely, follow the same process outlined in steps 1 and 2 above until you reach Thank screen after your purchase is made.
Step 4: Once there, click Download… at the bottom right of the page.
Your Vita game will now download remotely when:
- You access the PSN Store from your PS Vita.
- You turn on the PS Vita.
Once downloaded, your PS Vita game will show up on your device’s home screen.
It’s also worth mentioning that when cross-purchasing the game (a game where you get both the PS3 and PS Vita versions with a single purchase), you don’t need to remotely access the age-specific version you want to download. down. . All you need to do is click Download… and then you will be given the option to remotely download either version or both.
Also, if you change your mind and don’t want to download the game anymore, you can cancel the download remotely by going to Download queue section of the PSN website.
And that’s it. If you don’t have a PSN account or have one but never knew about the feature, it’s definitely a must-try for its convenience. Happy download!
