How to Set Windows 7 Explorer to Open Your Favorite Folder By Default

I hardly use Windows 7 libraries, and so I sometimes find it a bit annoying when the Windows explorer folder icon on my taskbar opens Libraries by default. I mean, I can quickly set it up to open my favorite/most frequently used folder, right? Turns out, this is not so simple.

If you also don’t use Windows 7 Library very often and want to set explorer to open your favorite folder every time, here’s a trick to use so you can directly open any drive or folder using the Windows Explorer folder itself on the taskbar.

Set Windows Explorer to open your favorites folder by default

Step 1: Browse to the folder that you want to open with Windows Explorer in the future.

Step 2: Now click on the address bar to display the full address of the folder and copy the address into a temporary text file.

Copy location

Step 3: Close the folder and right-click on the Windows Explorer folder on the taskbar. Now right click on Windows Explorer written just above unpin folder option and select properties.

Right click for properties

Step 4: In the properties dialog, look for the Target: field to see the text that reads %windir%\explorer.exe. Copy and save it to a text file (This is we’re making a safe error if we want to revert back to default settings).

Before

Step 5: Now pay attention! After %windir%\explorer.exe, create a space then write /e, (with a kiss mark) and then create a space again followed by the address of the folder you copied in step 2.

Afterward

Click OK to save your settings.

Now you can open any folder you choose using the above trick but what about opening My Computer or Documents? What is their path? Well, if you want to open My Computer or My Documents directly, just copy and paste the following text into the Target field:

My computer

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

My Documents

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /n,::{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}

My judgment

When I tried this trick on my computer, I noticed there was a significant amount of time between me clicking on Windows Explorer and opening the desired folder. After half an hour of research, I noticed something very unusual. The thing is, if you change the Windows Explorer shortcut from the library to any other folder of your choice, then every time you click on that folder to open the folder, an individual explorer process starts.

Many adventurers

I found it a bit annoying but there was nothing we could do. Another workaround, however, is to pin a folder to the taskbar using the Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner. It not only fixes multiple explorers, but also allows you to pin multiple favorite folders. But depending on how you work, there are pros and cons to both methods so choose accordingly.
