Out of all the things that smartphones have replaced, speakers remain untouched by them. Even if a phone has dual speakers, it will never match a complete standalone speaker.
In contrast, speakers have reached new heights in the past few years with smart speakers like the Amazon Echo that can speak and act on commands. If you own such a device, you can use it to stream audio from your phone. Essentially, it will act as a Bluetooth speaker for your phone.
Wondering how to do so? No worries. We’ll help you connect your Amazon Echo to your phone and tablet. You need to pair your device with your Echo first, then you can stream audio. There are two methods to connect the Echo to your phone. Check them out and also understand how to use it.
Method 1: Using the Alexa app
After setting up your Echo properly, follow these steps to connect it to your phone.
Step 1: Move with your phone within the searchable range near Echo.
Step 2: Open the Alexa app on your device and tap Devices at the bottom.
Step 3: Tap Echo & Alexa, then your device name.
Note:
Step 4: Tap on Bluetooth Devices and tap Pair New Device on the next screen.
Instead of steps 2-4, you can go to Settings from the sidebar of the Alexa app, then Device Settings. Here, tap your Echo device and select Bluetooth Devices. Tap Pair new device and continue with these steps.
Step 5: On your phone, go to Bluetooth settings. Now tap Pair new device or turn on Bluetooth, and your phone or tablet will automatically search for the new Echo. The steps may be different on your device. The basic idea is that you need to enter pairing mode.
Step 6: You will either get a pop-up about the Echo (confirm it) or the device will appear in the Available Devices section. Touch the corresponding one to pair.
Note:
If both connect properly, your Echo will confirm the connection by saying ‘Connected to…’ followed by the name of your device.
Method 2: Using Voice Commands
Step 1: Stay within range of the Echo with your phone.
Step 2: Go to Bluetooth settings on your phone and enter pairing mode. Stay on the same screen.
Step 3: Say the command ‘Alexa, Pair’ to the Echo. It will start searching for nearby Bluetooth devices.
Note:
Step 4: Tap Echo under Available devices on your phone. If all goes well, your Echo will notify if it successfully connects to that particular phone.
Use Echo as a Bluetooth Speaker
After successful pairing, use the command ‘Alexa, Connect my phone’ to reconnect to your phone in the future. Then play whatever is on your device and the Echo will act as a Bluetooth speaker.
Note:
To disconnect your currently connected device from the Echo, say the command ‘Alexa, Disconnect’.
You can only stream audio from your phone or other devices. Echo won’t be able to answer calls, text someone, or read notifications from your mobile device.
Problems connecting multiple devices
You need to be careful when using multiple paired devices. Although the Echo remembers many connected devices, it will connect to the most recently paired device if that device is within range.
To change the connected Bluetooth device, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the Alexa app and tap Devices at the bottom.
Step 2: Tap Echo & Alexa, then tap your Echo device.
Step 3: Tap Bluetooth Devices in Device Settings.
Step 4: Tap the small down arrow next to the currently connected device and select Disconnect.
Step 5: After disconnecting, touch another previously paired device to connect to it.
Bluetooth connection not working on Echo
If for some reason you can’t connect your phone to the Echo or the Echo doesn’t output sound to the connected device, try these fixes.
1. Compatibility Check
Unless your devices are not compatible with each other, they won’t connect.
If the Bluetooth section is missing from the Alexa app in your device, it means your Echo device doesn’t support Bluetooth. Echo supports limited Bluetooth profiles. So make sure your phone or tablet has a compatible configuration.
2. Disconnect other Bluetooth devices
If you’re trying to pair a new device with the Echo, you should disable Bluetooth on all other paired devices to prevent the Echo from connecting to them again. Only then pair it with a new device.
3. Turn off Bluetooth on your phone
Sometimes, turning Bluetooth off and on on your device also helps with connectivity. So give it a try.
4. Unplug Echo
It’s like restarting your Echo device. All you need to do is unplug it or turn it off for a few seconds. Plugging it back in should hopefully fix the problem.
5. Forget device
Another way to fix the problem is to unpair one or all connected Bluetooth devices. You can do that from your phone’s Bluetooth settings (open Bluetooth settings and forget Echo) or from the Alexa app.
For that, repeat steps 1-4 mentioned above for Multi-Device Pairing. Open the Alexa app, go to Devices > Echo & Alexa > Your Devices > Bluetooth Devices, tap Forget Device instead of Disconnect.
Finally, restart your phone and Echo.
Alexa, Connect My Phone
Amazon needs to do better with multiple devices. Sure, it connects to the last paired device, but sometimes we want to switch devices. I was hoping there was an easy way to directly connect the devices with a generic command such as ‘Connect to Mehvish’s iPad’ instead of disconnecting the device. Pray for the best.
In the meantime, we hope you can connect your phone to your Echo device. Got anything to add to the post? Let us know in the comments below.
