A Complete Guide to Using Picture in Picture Mode on iPhone

At the online-only WWDC event, Apple officially launched the new iOS 14. This new version of the operating system for iPhone is full of cool features with some tweaks and changes inside. Some of them are home screen widgets, App Gallery, ability to hide home screen pages, etc. Another standout feature is Picture in Picture support for iPhone. Phones running Android 8.0 Oreo and higher have been enjoying Picture in Picture since late 2017.

With iOS 14, you can finally watch your favorite YouTube videos, Netflix shows, or Prime Video while navigating the OS for other tasks. Picture in Picture isn’t just limited to watching videos on other apps, though. Apple has intelligently implemented various gestures and window sizes for Picture in Picture to enhance the experience. The company also provides video controls in Picture in Picture mode to make changes.

Picture in Picture mode is a very convenient feature for users. You don’t need to stop the video to scroll through new messages or reply to WhatsApp messages.

In this post, we will talk about how to use Picture in Picture mode, its functions, and other tips. Start.

Note: We’ve been using iOS 14 Public Beta for a while and have taken similar screenshots on an iPhone XR.

Where Is Picture in Picture in iOS 14 for iPhone

Picture in Picture mode is built right into iOS 14. This feature is enabled when you try to return to the home screen with the home button or swipe up gesture while watching a video.

When you watch your favorite TV series or movies on Netflix or Prime Video and get an urgent task you need to deal with, you can swipe up from the home screen and Picture in Picture mode will activated with the gesture.

Swipe up the homepage

You will see a floating window with video playback on the main screen. There is a catch. You will only be able to enable Picture in Picture while the video is playing. If you try to use a gesture on the home screen when the video is paused, it will close the app and not activate Picture-in-Picture mode.

In what apps can I use Picture-in-Picture Mode

Until now, Picture in Picture mode was supported in video streaming apps like Netflix, Prime Video and Apple TV+ and Apple’s Safari browser. Not surprisingly, YouTube is missing from the list. Do not worry. We also have a solution for that. So stick around until the end of the article. Surprisingly, Apple’s Photos app doesn’t support Picture-in-Picture.

I expect to see more streaming apps join the list as we approach the public release of iOS 14 in the final quarter of 2020.

Control which video you get in Picture in Picture Mode

Apple’s Picture in Picture mode isn’t limited to a simple video viewing experience. You can pause the video, move it forward or backward for 15 seconds, return to the app using the expand video option in the upper-right corner, and close Picture-in-Picture mode with the ‘X’ in the upper-left corner.

Apple also offers a live video playback timeline in Picture in Picture mode. Currently, these controls are only visible in the company’s apps, including Apple TV+ and the Safari browser. In Apps like Netflix and Prime Video, you can only see the play/pause button, the live video timeline, the video extender, and the ability to close the video.

For example, the company offers three Picture in Picture window modes for your taste. You need to master the gestures to use Picture in Picture mode effectively.

You can double-tap with one finger the Picture-in-Picture window mode and it will shrink in size. Use the same gesture again and it will shrink down to the smallest window size. Use the same double-tap with one-finger gesture to increase the size of Picture-in-Picture mode.
