The Facebook app has Messenger built in. However, Facebook removed it and created a standalone app for it – Facebook Messenger. In addition to the regular messaging feature, it also includes features like audio-video calls, groups, stickers, GIFs, stories, etc.
Sometimes you send a message to your friend via Facebook Messenger but it is not delivered. You usually notice the network waiting error at the top in the yellow banner. What does one do when every other app is working properly except Messenger?
Do not worry. Here we will tell you how to fix this problem on your Android device. Let’s start.
Device reboot
The first thing that you should try is restarting your phone. Sometimes, Facebook Messenger gets stuck on this error due to poor network connection. Restart will fix it.
Clear cache and data
Clearing the cache for the Messenger app won’t log you out of the app or delete your messages. However, if you delete your data, you will be signed out of Messenger and any downloaded photos contained in the Messenger folder on your device will be deleted. So you’d better back up before deleting data for this app.
Deleting data won’t delete your messages because you’ve synced them with your Facebook account or phone number. So when you sign back in, you’ll get your message. But you will have to reload the photos.
To clear cache and data for Facebook Messenger, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open device settings and go to Applications/Application Manager.
Step 2: In All Apps, tap Messenger.
Step 3: Tap Storage, then Clear Cache. Restart your device.
Step 4: If the problem is still not fixed, tap on Clear data/storage.
Turn on Airplane Mode
Airplane mode turns off all types of connection services on the device including mobile data and Wi-Fi networks. Enabling it for a while and then disabling it can help you fix the problem.
To turn on airplane mode, go to Settings, then Network & internet. Then enable Airplane mode. Alternatively, enable it from quick settings in the notification panel.
Turn off Battery Saver
Most of the time, battery saver or optimizer on your device causes this problem. You need to turn off battery saver mode for the Messenger app to work again.
You can do it individually for Messenger or turn off the whole feature. Check both options and see which one fixes the problem for you.
To turn off battery saver, follow the steps:
Step 1: Open device settings and go to Battery.
Step 2: Turn off Battery Saver here.
To disable optimization, follow these steps:
Step 1: Go to the Battery section in the device’s Settings.
Step 2: Tap the Battery optimization option or tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select Battery usage.
Step 3: Tap Messenger. Check if the app is allowed to use the battery in the background. For that, background restriction must be enabled. Then tap on Battery optimization.
Step 4: Here, turn off optimization for Messenger if enabled.
Switch to another connection
If you’re on mobile data, switch to Wi-Fi and vice versa. Sometimes the problem can be caused by a poor internet connection so switching to another medium will help.
Reset app preferences
Resetting app preferences also won’t erase any data on your device. It resets app permissions, notifications, restricts background data, enables disabled apps, and others.
To reset app preferences, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open device settings and go to Applications/Application Manager.
Step 2: Under All Apps or Installed Apps, tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner. Select Reset app preferences from the menu. You will get a pop-up window. Tap Reset Apps.
Turn off Ad Blocker
Do you have any ad blockers running on your device? Turn it off and restart your device. Then open Messenger. It will work normally.
Enable background data
If you’re running low on mobile data, you can reduce usage by turning it off in the background for some apps. However, sometimes this can interfere with the normal operation of the application.
To check and enable background data for Messenger, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open device settings and go to Applications/Application Manager.
Step 2: In All Apps, tap Messenger.
Step 3: Tap on Data usage and enable Background data. On some phones, you’ll have a setting called Restrict background data. It should be turned off.
Switch to Lite version
If the problem persists, switch to the Lite version of Facebook Messenger. This is a small application that consumes less data than the main application. Unlike the regular version which requires a faster mobile data connection for most of its features, the stripped down version will also work on slower connections.
