How to Install New Fonts in Windows 7

Usually, when I’m designing a new document, I find the default fonts boring. The good news is that you can easily find and install new fonts on your computer; and there are many websites that let you download new fonts for free. So if I want to trade Arial for a nicer new sans-serif, I can!

In earlier versions of Windows, you had to install fonts by accessing the file menu in Control Panel. However, installing fonts in Windows 7 can be easily done with drag and drop.

In this guide, you’ll see two different ways to install new fonts in Windows 7. But before you start, be sure to download any new fonts you want to use to your computer (I know, usually, but still).

Install new fonts in Windows 7 with drag and drop

Step 1: First, click Start, go to Control Panel, click Appearance and Personalization.

Step 2: Click the Fonts folder, and then minimize the folder. You will need it soon.

Step 3: Go to the folder or area where you saved the downloaded font (I saved it to my desktop), then double click on the folder to open it.

Step 4: You may see multiple folders, depending on the font you selected. Since this is a guide for Windows, you don’t need to keep the folder for MAC OS. Double-click the folder without the MAC OS label.

Step 5:

In the folder, locate the item with the File Type font.

Step 6: Drag the font file to the Fonts folder (minimize in its own window) to copy the file to the folder.

Congratulations! You’ve improved your design repertoire with a newly installed font! And think… all you have to do is drag and drop!

Install new fonts in Windows 7 with right click

Step 1: The first step is the same as mentioned above. Go to the font folder you downloaded.

Step 2: Again, double-click the folder that is not labeled MAC OS.

Step 3: In the folder, find the entry with the File Type font.

Step 4: Right-click the font file, and then click Install.

And that’s it! You have a new font at your fingertips!

Windows 7 makes the installation of new fonts much less time consuming than in previous versions. This way, you can spend less time organizing files on your computer and more time creating beautiful things.
