How to Easily Stream Media from Mac to PS3

When consoles like the Playstation and Xbox first came out, people wanted to do almost nothing with them but play games. No more. Today, new age devices like the PS3, Xbox 360, and Kinect go beyond their main product. You can watch TV and movies using them, connect them to the internet to do other things…now they are more than just game consoles.

Sophisticated consoles like the PS3 have plenty of capabilities. If you’re a Windows user, you already have Windows Media Center that can push media to your PS3. It is not really difficult.

However, not for Mac users.

That’s why I’ve put together this how-to guide to guide you through the process of streaming your media library from your Mac to the Playstation 3.

Time to start

Step 1: The basics – you need an Apple computer (obviously), a PS3 (again, obviously), a wireless router, and an internet connection.

Step 2: Download PS3 Media Server for Mac. This is the software we will use to get the job done. It is available for free on CNET’s download.com.

Step 3: Once you click “Download now”, the download will start immediately. Once done, find it in your downloads folder and open the file. It will be named “pms-macosx-1.20.409-BETA.dmg” by default.

Step 4: A new window will appear as shown below. Click and drag the icon that looks like Playstation 3 to the “Applications” folder to install it.

Step 5: Turn on your PS3 and just leave it on the home screen. This ensures that the media server program will recognize it after it is opened.

Step 6: Locate the PS3 Media Server icon in your Applications folder. It won’t have a PS3 icon at the moment, but go ahead and click it. When the following window pops up, press open.

Step 7: Once the PS3 Media Server detects your Playstation console, an image of the PS3 will show up in the main window, as shown below. If it doesn’t show up after a minute or so, navigate to the video tab on your PS3 menu and select “Search for Media Servers” to make sure that your computer and Playstation 3 are connected.

Step 8: Now, it’s time to select the folders containing files on your computer that you want to access on your PS3. Select the “Navigation/Sharing Settings” tab and click the green plus sign, below the Shared Folder heading.

Step 9: Choose as many folders as you want and add them to the list of shared folders. The folders in that list and the files within them will be directly accessible using your dashboard.

Step 10: Look in the Videos section of your Playstation menu for the PS3 Media Server icon, in that folder will be the shared folders you specified in Step 8.

Step 11: Simply clicking on a file will start the video playback. Reverse, rewind, pause and skip chapters are all supported functions. Subtitles work, but they are quite buggy and disrupt the overall viewing experience.

In my experience, this program works great. Video quality is decent and it can play HD movies without stuttering. For a free media streamer, you really can’t ask for more.
