Do you want to move your computer to the cloud (i.e. mostly online) after Google officially announced Chrome OS recently? Buckle up because I have something you want to try before you can get your hands on a netbook with Chrome OS. Called Jolicloud, it’s an operating system that fully integrates with the web and is incredibly easy to use.

What is Jolicloud?
Jolicloud was the first operating system designed entirely for people living on the web (yes, it predated Chrome OS.)
Essentially a complex web browser, Jolicloud is fun to use. It is a simple, easy to use operating system based on Linux and made with netbooks in mind. It integrates web applications and popular websites like Facebook to provide a seamless and immersive web experience.
Even if you’re not ready to commit, Jolicloud offers the option to test inside the Chrome web browser before installing. But trust me, you don’t need to try it.
Why do I need it?
Jolicloud’s intense focus on the essentials really plays to the strengths of older machines that have seen better days. My laptop from 2006 has become increasingly slow and unwieldy over time, but with Jolicloud installed, my laptop boots up in seconds. It gave a new life to an old machine that was falling into disrepair and saved me the cost of replacing it.
Jolicloud doesn’t just offer speed. There is easy to use too. I think it’s an operating system that even your grandma can use. Easy automatic updates, one-click app installation and removal, personalized launcher and cloud sync are some of the features. You can access your files by signing in to my.jolicloud.com on any web-connected device.
Wonderful sound. Now what about the app?
Web apps are available and quite a few, with the most popular ones like Facebook and Twitter pre-installed. The best and newest apps are in their own “Featured Apps Category” and the apps are also synced in the cloud, making them accessible from any computer. Most apps are nothing more than bookmarks for official app sites, but there are a few standout apps like Google Voice that show the platform’s true potential.
Install JoliCloud
Let’s go through the steps to install it on Windows.
Step 1: Direct your browser to Jolicloud official website and select the Download link at the top of the screen. (Shown below)
Step 2: On the download page, you have two options, install Jolicloud alongside your existing Windows operating system or install Jolicloud on Windows, making it your primary operating system.
For this tutorial, I chose to install it alongside Windows.
Step 3: You may want to play Angry Birds game on your iPhone as the download can take a while.
Step 4: Once the JolicloudInstaller file has finished downloading, locate the file and open it up. The window shown below will appear. Go ahead and click Get started to start the installation.
Step 5: Choose a username and password to use with Jolicloud. This will be the username and password you will use to access your computer at startup. You will be asked to create another set to access your Jolicloud account and thus for the files you choose to save in the cloud.
Jolicloud has no rules regarding numbers, uppercase or anything else, so feel free to choose whatever you want.
Step 6: This is where you choose the hard drive space you want to allocate to Jolicloud. I recommend using the optimal setting of 29 GB, as Jolicloud does not require additional space due to its compact nature.
Step 7: It’s time to take a break, although this installation only takes a few minutes.
Step 8: Jolicloud requires a reboot to complete the installation. When your computer restarts, you’ll be given the option to boot into Windows or Jolicloud. Use the directional arrows on your keyboard to select Jolicloud and then press enter.
Step 9: Jolicloud will take you through another 3-5 minutes of the final installation time before booting to the screen you see below.
Step 10: If you have an encrypted connection, a dialog box will appear asking you to connect to the Internet. Locate an icon at the top of the screen (a cord unplugged) and right-click it to bring up a list of available networks. Then choose yours and enter the password. When it connects, click “I’m online!”
Step 11: Now it’s time to create the login and password for your Jolicloud account. I find it easiest to have the same username and password for my OS and Jolicloud account, but that’s up to you.
There is also the option to use your Facebook login to access Jolicloud. However, I’m not a fan of allowing bots to have unlimited access to my personal Facebook account, so I left out that option.
Step 12: Another dialog box will pop up. Hit “Start” and it will load for a second before asking you to describe your device as a netbook, laptop, desktop, or other. Select the machine you are using and press next. It will then ask you for the make and model of the device you are using. Select the brand and model of your device, then tap next. If your model is not an option, enter it in the “other” box. You can then name your new Jolicloud device, so have fun with it!
If you have completed all the steps above, then you are now using the brand new Jolicloud desktop. Congratulations! You are a pioneer in the cloud computing community and have bravely gone where few others have been before.
