If you’re using the latest version of Internet Explorer (IE) and use the search bar at the top right to search the web, you know that by default it searches Bing, Microsoft’s own search engine.
This article will tell you how you can change it to Google or some other search provider, and how you can prevent third-party programs from setting their own search engine as default.
Here are the steps.
Open IE and click the bottom triangle icon in IE’s search bar, then select “Find more providers”.
The Internet Explorer Add-ons Library website opens. You can add your favorite search providers by clicking the yellow “Add to Internet Explorer” button.
In the “Add a search provider” dialog box, select the “Make this default search provider my default search provider” option and then press Add.
You can now use the desired engine to search the Internet from IE’s search bar.
Also, in case some applications try to modify this setting (some apps tend to install unnecessary toolbars and change the default search engine to something else), you can take the preferred action by configuring the relevant options in IE.
Click “Tools > Manage Add-ons,” then select “Search Providers” in the left navigation pane, and you’ll see options to remove or reset the provider as default. There, at the bottom, you’ll see a box that says: “Prevent programs from suggesting changes to my default search provider.” You can check this option and save the settings.
After you check that box, other programs will not be able to change the default search provider that you have set in internet explorer.
