How to Pin Any App or Folder to Windows 7 Taskbar

The newly designed taskbar in Windows 7 allows you to pin programs to the taskbar for faster access, a feature you can effectively use to increase your productivity.

Pinning a program to the taskbar also gives you access to a Jump Lists function that will immediately take you to the documents, media files, web pages, and other program-specific configurations (for example, you can right-click a tab to launch IE with InPrivate Browsing) that you use most often.

If you’re using the Aero scheme, you can even see the thumbnails of each instance by moving the mouse pointer over the respective tab. In general, pinning a frequently used application or folder to the taskbar has its own advantages.

To pin a specific program to the Windows 7 taskbar, simply drag and drop the shortcut there, or right-click the program icon and click “pin to taskbar”.

However, you may notice limitations that some system folders like Computer, Recycle Bin, etc cannot be pinned directly to the taskbar. Similarly, because Windows 7 treats popular folders as subsections, you can just pin them under the Windows Explorer icon as attachments.

In this article, I will show you how to pin anything to the Windows 7 taskbar by creating a “fake” shortcut.

Press Win + R and type “notepad” to launch the text editor.

No need to type anything, just click “File -> Save as” in the top menu bar, select “Save as type” to “All Files”, then name the file with exe extension, for example: fake.exeor anything else.

A fake executable has been created, right click on it you will find an entry that says “Pin to Taskbar”. Select this and a new icon will appear on the taskbar.

Right click on the pinned item then click the fake exe file again, select “Properties”.

You should now see the usual shortcut properties window. Just enter the file or folder path in the “Target” field.

Then click the “Change Icon” button to replace the desired icon (the system provides many built-in icons, you can copy and paste the path %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll to find them).

Click OK until you return to the desktop.
