How to Live Monitor Your Microphone Input on Mac

Whether you run podcasts or enjoy recording music covers, you can benefit from having live monitoring of your audio input. That is, with the input turned on, the sounds you input are automatically fed through the output so you hear the sounds again as you make them. The effect is similar to using a microphone on a stage and hearing the sound come out instantly through the speakers around you.

Having this feature is important to check the microphone volume level, speaker distance, sound quality, etc. Maybe you just want to record a bit of reverb. Here are two ways on Mac to enable free live monitoring.

Note: This will work for both your Mac’s built-in microphone as well as third-party microphone accessories

Download AudioMonitor

AudioMonitor is a free application for OS X that allows you to monitor and edit the audio input coming into your Mac. You can download it at Softpedia. Note that it downloads as “MTCoreAudio” but for our intents and purposes the app itself is AudioMonitor.

When you download the program, it will show up as a bundle of content. The only thing you need to take care of is AudioMonitor. Drag that icon to Applications folder on your Mac to install the program. Let’s remove the rest.

When you can launch Audio screen from Applications you will notice it is a very basic and lightweight application. Before enabling live monitoring, make sure you select the appropriate input at the top. If you’re using your Mac’s microphone, hold Built-in microphone And Internal microphone selected option. Otherwise, select your accessory’s name in the drop-down menu when connected.

Also verify the output source is correct at the bottom. Once you’re all set, click play through to enable live monitoring. You can test by turning up the volume on your computer and speaking into the microphone. You’ll hear your own voice play back in real time, which means live monitoring is active.

Using GarageBand

GarageBand is commonly used for musical instruments and recording projects, but if you don’t want to download new apps, GarageBand also has live monitoring. I prefer using AudioMonitor because it’s much lighter and simpler, but GarageBand works just as well.

All you need to do is open GarageBand and make sure you’re starting on an empty intercept, i.e. don’t open a previously working file. For your new project, select The project is empty then tap Select.

GarageBand will ask you about your input settings. Select Record with microphone or line input at top. Then below, make sure the checkbox on the right is ticked that says I want to hear my instrument when I play and record.

Continue with your new project and you’ll notice your first track has a bright icon that looks like an upside down Wi-Fi signal. It’s live monitoring, enabled. Make sure you have a pair of headphones ready, then try speaking into the microphone to test your ability to hear your own voice.
