Google Docs is a great online alternative to Microsoft Word. The web-based word processor offers many cool features with smart styling and editing tools. With an active network connection, you can create and edit documents on the go, even with your smartphone.
Most of us tend to work with multiple file types and we keep trying new features to fit our requirements. However, while playing with these features, we had trouble with the settings. To change it back to the default values, we need to reset them. In this post, we will tell you how to reset key Google Docs settings like margins, numbering, formatting, etc.
Start.
Reset numbering
While creating a numbered list, you will want to split the list and start from a new number to get it right. Let’s say you’re creating a question with multiple titles. The first part will have four questions. Now if you want to number the second part starting from five, you will have to start the numbering again.
Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: In the Google Docs page, first create a numbered list by clicking the list icon.
Step 2: To reset the numbering, double-click the list number. Then with the number selected, right click on it.
Step 3: A pop-up window will appear, click Restart numbering.
Step 4: Enter the number from where you want to start the list.
Alternatively, move your cursor to the top of the list item and right-click it. Then from the menu select Reset numbering and set the number.
Reset format
There are two ways to reset text formatting in Google Docs. One is to use the Remove Formatting option and the other is the Paste No Format option.
The former will remove the font style, but it won’t match the document style. Furthermore, it also won’t remove images and links from the text. The second option, on the other hand, removes all links and images from the text, and matches it with the font used in the document body. It removes all formatting and leaves you with plain text.
To remove all formatting, select and copy the text, then right-click and select Paste without formatting from the menu.
To simply remove formatting, select the text, then click the Format option and select Remove Formatting.
Alternatively, click the Remove Formatting icon present on the toolbar.
Reset print
If you’re having trouble printing a page from Google Docs and changing the settings doesn’t solve your problem, you can try resetting the printer settings.
Because Google Docs uses the printer settings for Chrome, you’ll need to reset it. To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Click on the three-dot icon present in the upper right corner of Chrome. Then select Settings from the menu.
Step 2: Scroll down and click Advanced.
Step 3: Again scroll down and click Restore settings to factory defaults. A pop-up will appear asking you to confirm. Click Reset settings.
Note:
Reset dictionary
Similar to Microsoft Word, Google Docs comes with a native dictionary where you can add new words. However, sometimes a lot of wrong words are added to the dictionary. In that case one might want to reset the dictionary.
Sadly, that’s not possible. You cannot delete all new words from the dictionary at once. However, you can remove words one by one.
Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: Open a document in Google Docs. Then click on the Tools option.
Step 2: Click on Spelling and then select Personal Dictionary.
Step 3: On the Personal Dictionary screen, click the cross icon next to the word you want to delete from Google Docs.
Finally, press the Save button.
Reset deposit
To reset the margins, follow the steps:
Step 1: Open a document and then click File option. Select Page Setup.
Step 2: The Page Setup window will open. Enter a new margin for your document. If you want the new margins to be your default, click the Set as Default option. Finally, click Save.
To reset Header and Footer margins, follow these steps:
Step 1: In the Google Docs document, click the Format option and select Headers and Footers.
Step 2: In the window that opens, set the header and footer margins according to your needs.
Reset paragraph style
Google Docs also lets you reset your paragraph styles. You don’t have to remove all the formatting to get there. You get a feature dedicated to it.
Here’s how to do it.
Step 1: In a Google Docs document, click the Format option and select Paragraph Style.
Step 2: Under Paragraph Style, go to Options and select Reset Style.
Bring it back
You should explore the different settings and see what they do. Now, even if you messed up a setting, you know how to restore it. That way, you can restore your balance and continue using Google Docs as you see fit.
Google Docs is part of Google Drive. Many users have switched from other cloud services like Dropbox to Google Drive. If you’re thinking about it too, check out my colleague’s experience switching from Dropbox to Google Drive.
