Instagram Delete vs Archive: What’s the Difference

Instagram offers a number of similar-sounding features. That doesn’t mean they do the same thing. For instance, you have mute and hide features. While the former is used to hide other people’s posts and stories from your view, the latter allows you to hide your story from others.

Similarly, there is delete and archive on Instagram. Many times you see a photo on your profile that makes you unhappy. Although when the photo was published, you enjoyed it, but now it annoys you. That’s normal – times change.

Usually, you’ll want to delete the post. But when you are about to delete it, you will see the option to archive. Now you may be wondering what is archiving and how is it different from deletion?

What happens when you archive or delete a post

When you archive a post, it will disappear from your profile. However, it just disappears for others as you can still see it in the Archived Instagram Posts section. So it hides them from other people’s view.

Repositories usually remove photos/videos from public view. Although it is not available to others, you still have access to it.

In contrast, post deletion is a permanent feature. Posts disappear completely for everyone including you. Once you delete it, you cannot restore it and neither can Instagram. The only option is that you will have to re-upload the photo/video.

Likes, comments and captions

Archiving a post still retains all likes and comments. Even annotations are not affected. Meaning that when you unarchive it, all three will reappear on your profile along with the post as if nothing happened.

In case of deletion, since the post is no longer available, the likes, comments and captions will also follow it.

What happens when you unarchive or restore a post

You can unarchive a post at any time. That is, you can bring your archived posts back to your profile without re-uploading them. When you do, it will appear on your profile in the same location, not as a new post. For example, if you archived a post from June 2018, that post will appear chronologically in posts published before July 2018.

However, once you hit the delete button, the post is gone forever. Of course, there’s no way to get it back, unless you have a copy of it on your phone. Then you also need to republish that post as a new post.

Edit post

Once the post is archived, you can edit the caption and its placement similar to a normal post. That is not possible after you delete a post.

Is it possible to archive the story

Yes and no. Don’t be confused. Instagram automatically archives all your published stories. There is no manual labor involved in storing stories. Once the clock stories hit 24 hours from the time they went live, they are removed from public view and moved to the Archives section — visible only to you.

Please note that ‘Save to Archive’ must be enabled in Settings > Story controls for the archive feature to work.

Archive of stories offers more functionality than posts. You can save them on your phone, make highlights from them, share them again as stories or delete them.

Similar to posts, once stories are deleted — either directly or from the archive, they’re gone forever. They will also disappear from the highlight (if they are added there).

Archive and delete on PC

Storage is currently only available on mobile apps (Android and iPhone). You cannot archive, unarchive, or even view archived posts through the Instagram website on your PC. Oddly enough, Instagram’s website can’t delete posts.

When to use

Archives provide a great way to organize content without actually deleting it. For example, if you only want to show photos of your cat for a specific time, you can archive the rest of the post.

Similarly, you can use it to delete expired content in the case of business profiles. That is, if you have previously posted some selling posts that are no longer valid, you can archive them if you want to save them for future reference.

Furthermore, the archive feature can be used to clean up your feed or do privacy practices like hiding photos from your partner. Archives are a lifesaver in such times as you can retrieve them at any time.

On the other hand, since deletion is a permanent process, only use it when you’re sure you no longer want those photos to be part of your Instagram profile.

How to archive and delete posts

To archive or delete a post, follow these steps:

Step 1: Launch the Instagram app and go to your profile screen.

Step 2: Tap the photo that you want to archive or delete. Then tap the three dots icon in the upper right corner.

Step 3: From the menu, tap Archive or Delete as needed.

How to unarchive posts and stories

Step 1: Open your Instagram profile screen. Tap the storage icon. On Android, you’ll find a storage icon (which looks like a clock) next to the three-bar menu. On iPhone, it’s available on the left.

Step 2: You will be taken to the storage section. Here, tap on Archive Story (Android) or Archive (iPhone) and select Post from the menu.

Step 3: Here you will find all your archived posts. Tap the post you want to unarchive.
