If you’re a powerful Facebook user, your Messenger inbox can fill up with dozens of conversations over time. Sometimes, you can miss important messages in tons of unnecessary conversations. Facebook offers a neat trick to archive unrelated chats to keep your inbox clean. Here’s how you can archive messages in Facebook Messenger.
Message archiving is available on the Facebook Messenger mobile and desktop apps. We will talk about all three platforms and briefly cover the difference between deleting and archiving conversations in Facebook Messenger.

What happens when you archive a conversation in Messenger
Before we show you how to archive a conversation in Messenger, let’s talk about what it means. When you archive a conversation in Messenger, the app hides that conversation from your home screen. You can always unarchive conversations from the same menu.
Unlike WhatsApp and Telegram, Messenger does not offer the option to pin important chats to the top. Instead of finding relevant messages, you can archive unnecessary conversations and keep only the necessary contacts on the Messenger homepage.
How to archive chats on Facebook Messenger mobile app
Most users prefer the Messenger mobile app to stay in touch with friends and family members on the go. You can use the steps below to archive messages in Messenger for Android and iPhone.
Facebook Messenger for Android
Step 1: Open the Messenger app on your Android phone.
Step 2: Long press on the chat you want to archive.
Step 3: Select Archive and hide it from your main inbox.
Repeat the same for all unrelated chats in Messenger and keep your homepage spam-free. Unfortunately, there’s no way to select multiple chats in Messenger and archive them with a single tap.
Facebook Messenger for iOS
iPhone users can follow the steps below to archive chats in Messenger.
Step 1: Launch the Messenger app on iPhone.
Step 2: Long press a chat and select ‘Archive’ from the context menu.
Step 3: You can also swipe left in the chat and select Archive.
Archive chats on Facebook Messenger Desktop
If you’re working on a desktop computer, you don’t need to connect to your mobile phone to store messages in Messenger. The same option is also available on the desktop. Here’s what you need to do.
Step 1: Access Facebook Messenger using a web browser on your computer. Sign in with your Facebook account details.
Step 2: Check the list of conversations from the main menu.
Step 3: Hover your cursor over the conversation and click on the kebab menu (looks like an ellipsis).
Step 4: Select Chat Archive.
Step 5: Repeat the same for all the chats that you want to hide.
Archive vs. Delete in Messenger
When you delete a conversation in Messenger, the app permanently deletes the entire message history with the recipient. You’ll need to think twice before deleting a chat. You cannot undo and retrieve messages.
Archiving a chat does not affect any messages in the chat. They are stored in your Facebook account and you can always access them from the Archived menu.
Does Messenger mute my archived chats?
Whenever you send or receive a message in an archived chat, Messenger deletes it from the Archived menu and puts it back on the home screen for easy access.
Archive vs. Ignore Messages in Messenger
As mentioned above, archiving a conversation just moves the conversation from the main menu to a separate Archived tab. It does not mute notifications from the chat.
However, when you use the ‘Ignore Message’ option, Messenger will not notify you when the person texts you. The application will move the conversation to Spam. Facebook won’t notify the person when you ignore the message.
Unarchive messages in Facebook Messenger
Accidentally archived important chats in Messenger? Unarchive them won’t take more than a few minutes.
