If you are a Vista Ultimate user and have switched to Windows 7, you may remember a tool that allows you to set videos and animations as desktop wallpapers instead of still images.
Called Windows DreamScene, this utility is part of Windows Vista Ultimate Extras and helps you play your favorite video clips in the background without consuming CPU (it uses graphics processor or GPU).
This tool is not available for Windows 7 although you can use the built-in slideshow feature on the screen to play a slideshow of still images.
But, there is always a way out. If you are missing video wallpapers on Windows 7 here are two ways to get them.
1. Windows 7 DreamScene Activator
Windows 7 DreamScene Activator is a small but useful tool to migrate DreamScene feature from Windows Vista to Windows 7. You just need to download, run the tool as Administrator, then click “Enable DreamScene”. The function will work. (If you are wondering how to run a tool as Administrator in Windows 7, check the 2nd point in this shortcut article.)
Windows 7 DreamScene Activator will copy the necessary files, then add the necessary registry keys and values. Finally, restart Explorer to enable this feature. (It is therefore advisable to save your work before processing.)
Once the process is complete, you can right-click on the mpg or wmv file and select “Set as desktop background” in the context menu to activate DreamScene.
Although the Ultimate version of Windows 7 is not required for this tool, the Aero schema is still needed, which means that the Starter and Home Basic editions are excluded.
2. Wallpaper mode in VLC media player
VLC is one of the most popular free media players, supporting nearly every codec. The great thing is that you can also use it to play back supported media files (not just limited to mpg and wmv files) as Windows desktop background.
Launch VLC media player, go to Tools > Preferences on the menu bar.
Switch to the “Video” tab, select “DirectX Video Output (DirectDraw)” as the “Output” option in the “Display” section, then check the “Enable Wallpaper” box.
Now the video you are playing will automatically display as your desktop wallpaper.
Note 1: You can also use this trick on Windows Vista and Windows XP. However, the system will lose the Aero effect during video playback and return to normal after processing.
Note 2: KMPlayer can also do this for Windows XP users in “Desktop Mode”. However, it has some compatibility issues with Windows 7.
