Get a 360 Degree ( Swivel ) View Of Photos in Picasa Albums

Web Picasa isn’t as popular as Flickr or Facebook for storing photos, but like everything Google, it has a rich set of cool features that make managing your albums easy and fun.

One such feature is “Rotate View”, which was recently introduced and announced by the official Google Photos blog.

Rotation is the ability to rotate an image (actually a combination of photos, as explained below) 360 degrees simply by dragging it left or right. The photo made a full circle showing all the angles.

You can get a rotate view feel on the original ‘rotation viewer’ project page (click on the image):

Rotation viewIn general, creating a realistic 360-degree view effect requires you to take pictures of the same object from multiple close angles, arrange them all together in the right order, and line them up in a quick slideshow. And if you happen to have a bunch of such photos lying around, you still need to be able to handle some javascript work to be able to cycle through those pictures.

Thankfully, Web Picasa makes the process of adding a rotation smooth. Not only does it have built-in features, but it also helps in its use Actually easy.

Picasa for desktop doesn’t yet have a rotated view, though you can expect it to appear in a future update.

Using the rotation effect in Web Picasa is child’s play.

  • As usual, create a new album and add the necessary photos to it. Great if you have a snapshot of an object taken from different angles, but you can also add random images. Either way, the rotation still looks great – just check out this slideshow of the recent Winter Olympics, made by a Googler!
  • In the demo album I created, I added four photos of the Samsung N150 netbook taken from different angles (the more you add, the better!):

  • When you have your album ready and organized, click the Slide Show button and pause for a moment when all the photos are loaded into slideshow mode (otherwise the effect won’t be as smooth). Once done, just start dragging your mouse left or right and you’ll be panning through your photo!

You can share the album with your friends, family members, and colleagues simply by clicking the Share button on the right sidebar and emailing them.

Or you can embed a slideshow (with rotation) of your album on your blog/website, like I did here:

To embed a slideshow, look for the “Embed Slideshow” link on the sidebar of your Picasa Web.

The rotation view in Web Picasa is based on the open source rotation viewer project hosted at code.google.com. If you’re feeling weird, you can get the code right from their site and implement it on your website or blog.

Enjoy viewing your photos in 360 degrees with the new rotation feature in Picasa Web Albums.
