How to Enable Blood Pressure Monitoring on Samsung Galaxy Watch 4

The Apple Watch dominates the wearables industry in terms of popularity and features. The biggest downside, however, is that the Apple Watch only works with iPhones. The Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 is a solid choice for Android users.

It’s the only smartwatch in the country of Android running the latest Wear OS version with Samsung’s One UI Watch. While it has a lot of health tracking capabilities, it lacks some important features based on your region. For example, Blood Pressure Monitoring is not available on Galaxy Watch 4 in the US region in April 2022.

Thankfully, there is a workaround for this problem. If you have a Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, here’s how you can turn on the Blood Pressure feature (and electrocardiogram if it’s not available in your area).

Why blood pressure monitoring is not available in some areas

All of the company’s products require government approval to include specific health-related features in their devices. That is to ensure that the data obtained from this feature is accurate and that the claims are legitimate. The Electrocardiogram feature has been approved by the FDA in the US, but the Blood Pressure monitoring feature is still pending approval.

Supported regions and devices

Even if BP and ECG are officially supported in your region, there is another caveat when using them. You need a Samsung smartphone to use with Galaxy Watch 4. Otherwise, ECG and BP will not work. Besides the Galaxy Watch 4, you need a smartphone and a PC or Mac to get apps on the smartwatch. Once you have all of them ready, you can proceed with the steps.

Note that this will also trigger an ECG in your region if it’s not officially supported.

Set up ADB and connect the meter

We will be using ADB (Android Debug Bridge) to install apps on the Galaxy Watch 4. If you haven’t done this before, you can check out our guide on how to install APKs on Wear OS smartwatches. .

Step 1: Download the relevant ADB files based on the operating system you use on your computer.

Step 2: Extract the ZIP file to a location of your choice. On Windows, hold Shift and right click on the extracted file and select ‘Open command window here’. On Mac and Linux, open Terminal, type CD and press Enter to change to the active directory. Then drag the extracted folder and drop it into the Terminal window. You should now get the path to that folder on Terminal. Press the Enter key.

Step 3: To enable ADB debugging on the watch, open the Settings app.

Step 7: Once you open the Settings app, you’ll find Developer Options at the bottom of the page. Touch it.

Step 8: Click the toggle next to ADB debugging to enable the feature. Tap the green checkmark when prompted for confirmation.

Step 9: Scroll down a bit and also enable the toggle next to Debugging over Wi-Fi.

Step 10: The watch may initially display an Unavailable message, which will soon be replaced by a string of characters including the IP address. This means ADB over Wi-Fi is enabled. Note the IP address shown here. It should look like 192.168.1.325:5555.

Download the required apps

Step 1: The Blood Pressure feature works through an app called Samsung Health Monitor that is region-locked. We will be using a modified version of the app to bypass the regional restrictions.

Download the APK for your phone directly on your smartphone itself. The APK for the watch can be downloaded to your computer. Note that these are links to the user’s Google Drive and may be taken down at any time. Although these packages have been checked to be free of any malicious code, but still modified, continue to install them at your own risk.

Step 2: Install the downloaded APK on your smartphone by tapping it in your file manager.

Step 3: Move the watch’s APK to the ADB installed folder on your computer. In our case it was the platform-tools folder.

Step 4: Now run the command in a Terminal window – adb -s install Watch4.SHM.MOD.XXXXXX.apk – use the following APK filename from ‘install’ in this command.

Step 5: Wait for the installation to complete. You will see a ‘Success’ message once done.

Step 6: Go back to the Settings app on your Galaxy Watch 4 and go to Developer Options.

Now that you have installed all the necessary apps and files on your watch and phone, you can use the Blood pressure feature on your Galaxy Watch 4.

Step 1: Open the Samsung Health Monitor app on your smartphone and sign in with your Samsung account.

Step 2: Now, launch the Samsung Health Monitor app on your Galaxy Watch 4 and go through the initial setup process.
