There is no shortage of scanner apps in this world. And they keep getting better with each update. CamScanner leads the way with smart scanning features and supports Google Drive and other cloud storage services. The app is available for Windows Phone but it is limited compared to its Android or iOS counterparts. For instance, CamScanner for WP does not offer OCR (Optical Character Recognition) scanning.

What is office lens?

Office Lens is a free Microsoft app that integrates seamlessly with MS’s OneNote note-taking service.
When you open the app, you’ll see three modes: Photo, Whiteboard, and Document. Picture Mode just takes a picture and uploads it to your connected OneNote account – no processing needed here.
Whiteboard mode is useful if you attend a lot of whiteboard meetings. If you’ve tried to photograph a whiteboard, you know that the image contains a lot of glare and shadows. This mode cleans it all up so you can actually read what’s written on the board.
How to use Document Mode in Office Lens
Finally, Document mode is the mode we’re interested in.
Use this mode and take a picture of anything (a page or an object) with English text printed on it.. clear text.
After the photo is taken, you will have to wait a few seconds until the photo is processed and all the text is converted to a readable format.
You can then save the image to your camera roll. If you sign in with the Microsoft account associated with OneNote, the image will automatically be uploaded as a new note to OneNote.
Search OCR text with OneNote
Now that the document is in OneNote, you can use the app’s search function to search for anything in the document. The app will not only show documents with keywords, but also show you the context of where that keyword is.
To do this in Evernote, you need a $5/month premium account, and Google Drive’s OCR search will point you to the right document, nothing else. Two thumbs up for Microsoft there.
How better are office lenses?
Now that OneNote is free for all platforms, you can view your scanned documents on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and even the web.
Google Drive uploads images as PDFs, while Office Lens only saves images as OCR images. Not only does that save space, but it also means you can easily share it with anyone and open images on any platform without much fuss. Text inside images can’t be selected, but Google Drive’s app doesn’t scan any text either.
