When you move to paperless, an important part of the transition is dealing with features that are still stuck in the analog era. Signatures for example. Yes, you’ll find fingerprint authentication on newer iPhones, but when it comes to signing a contract, no matter how confusing, you still need to do it manually.

Or you? We’ve told you about apps for iOS and Android that let you sign any document digitally with your finger or stylus while you’re on the go. But those apps did the processing on their own servers, which means they have access to your precious data.

If you have a MacBook running OS X 10.10 Yosemite, you can securely sign documents without installing any additional software or worrying about privacy.

Use Preview for Mac

Preview is an app that comes with every Mac. It’s an underrated tool that lets you do a lot of great stuff. It opens images, PDF files, allows you to batch edit images, etc.

Today we will focus on Signal utility in Preview.

How to sign in with a trackpad on a Mac

Open the PDF or image file you need in the Preview app. click Show bookmarks toolbar button, looks more like a briefcase than a toolbox. This will display an additional bookmark widget bar.

Clicking on the icon will bring up a drop-down menu with touchpad highlighted part. Here, you’ll see an avatar for your MacBook’s trackpad.

Touch Click here to get started and start sliding your finder on the trackpad to draw your signature.

I admit this is not an easy task, especially if you are not used to drawing on a touchpad. You also need to remember that unlike a real signature, the Preview app for some reason doesn’t allow you to break lines. Your signature will need to be in continuous motion without lifting a finger.

Scan signatures drawn with pen and paper

It took me a long time to get used to using the trackpad to draw my signature. And even then it’s nowhere near as good as the real thing. If that’s your case, Preview has a solution: a camera scanner.

Here’s what you do:

Step 1: Take a clean white sheet of paper and write your signature in easy-to-read black ink. Don’t make the signature tiny.

Step 2: Similar words Signal utility, select Camera options and hold the piece of paper in front of the MacBook’s camera. It will scan your signature from the piece of paper.

Save a signature for later use: When you create a signature, either through the touchpad or the camera, Preview automatically saves it to the app. Next time you click Signal you will see a list of all saved signatures that you can insert into any document with just one click.

Did this signature solution work for you?

Was your first experience signing with a trackpad as funny as mine? Are you used to it or have you resorted to scanning your signature through the camera? Let us know in the comments below.
