How to Use Free Tools to Remove Background Noise from Audio

recording1

One day, one of my friends in the office wanted me to help remove background noise from the screen.

the video he took on his phone

(I am usually the one dealing with all such problems at home and in the office, as you can imagine.) I could give it names like Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier Elements, but these tools are heavy and better suited for a professional video editor. Plus, they come at a hefty price if anyone wants to use them after the 30-day trial period.

So he needs free tools to get the job done, and that’s exactly what we’ll cover in part 1 of this series. In this article, we will proceed to remove background noise from an audio file using a powerful program called Audacity. In part 2, we’ll show you how to do the same on video.

Cool Tip: Did you know that you can extract audio from a video using Audacity? Please check it out.

Holistic approach

We will be using two tools – Windows Movie Maker and Audacity – for this task. In the current article we will see how we can process only one audio file and remove the noise while in the next we will see how we can extract audio files from videos and stitch them together after processing.

Working on Audio Tracks

Once you have Audacity installed on your computer, open the application and load the music file you want to process. Having done that, follow these steps to remove background noise.

Step 1: Listen to the entire audio file and record the area where you hear background noise. Make sure you choose an area with maximum ambient noise. Use Audacity itself to listen to the file and make selections through simple clicking and dragging on the wave chart.

Select

Note: A passage with only background noise is critical for the tool to function. If you don’t have it in your current video, make sure you only record the background noise next time you create a video. This will give you the best output for the processed audio.

Step 2: Having done that, Navigate to the Effects menu and select the Noise Removal option.

Step 3: Here, you will see the Get Noise Profile button. This button is only useful if you have not selected an audio track.

Step 4: When using for the first time, I recommend you to try the default settings displayed in the same window. They are ideal for most scenarios. However, as you work on this tool, you can use trial and error to explore different variations of settings.

Noise canceling

Step 5: Now all you need to do is click the OK button and let the tool do its magic. Audacity will remove most of the background noise from the soundtrack, and you can go ahead and save it as a new MP3 file on your hard drive.

Still thinking of downloading Adobe Premier Elements? Buy it from Amazon for $89.00.

Conclusion

So that’s how you can remove background noise from an audio file with the free and useful Audacity. Don’t be afraid to mess with the different settings available. Audacity is a very powerful tool and you should explore it as much as you can.

While the results may not be perfect, it certainly does a good job of canceling out background noise.
