Create Update.zip Backup File for all your Android Apps

Recently, we have covered many apps and tools on Guiding Tech that can help you

backup and restore android apps easily

. The thing is, 7 out of 10 times someone has to backup and restore apps on his Android because he might be trying it out.

New custom ROM on his device

. In addition, one hardly needs a reason to restore frequently backed-up applications.

Now, whenever someone installs a ROM on his device, it is done using a custom recovery installed on the device like ClockworkMod recovery or EXT4 recovery. Furthermore, these ROMs are packaged as zip files, which are flashed for installation into the phone’s memory.

How about creating a zip archive of all the apps installed on your Android and flashing it directly from the recovery after installing the apps? It sounds good! Since this method doesn’t require any third party apps in the recovery process, you will no longer have to download a backup app from the market to restore all of them. Also the recovery process is much faster than conventional methods.

Create a flashable update file

App2zip is a nifty app for Android that can easily create a flashable update.zip file for all the apps installed on your device. The app requires root access on your phone, but that shouldn’t be a problem as we will be using it for devices that have a custom recovery installed on them. After you install and run the app, it will ask you to give it super user (root) access. Once it’s done, the app will read the apps and their data and list it. All user apps will be listed first, then system apps.

All you need to do now is select the apps you want to backup and hit the Start button. The application will read the packages and create an update.zip file for them. You can rename the backup file if you want. Later when you want to restore it, all you need to do is flash the zip file with a custom recovery.

BackupReady

Note: Since the app is still in early release, please test the app to backup and restore a useless app before you trust it with all your apps. The app worked on my One X and I hope it works for you too.

Conclusion

Honestly, this app is great. I have been waiting for such an application for over a year now and with App2zip I can say that I have got my perfect app backup solution. Still for backing up contacts and SMS messages, I continue to prefer Wondershare MobileGo.
