How to Use Google’s New Standalone Street View App

There are many wonderful places in the world. Practically speaking, you will never see most of them. Yes, it’s a downer. But thanks to that amazing thing you carry around in your pocket called your smartphone, you can now – virtual. Google Street View has for many years put us in the center of a completely different place. Literally. Since Street View captures 360-degree footage, you can simply swipe around, move forward, and look around as much as you like.

Until now, this experience was just a feature in Google Maps. Now, Google has broken it down into its own app (on both Android and iPhone), and it’s well worth the download. Let me tell you all the amazing things you can do with this new app.

How to Explore in Google Street View

The Street View app includes more content than what Street View cars can capture. If a Google user has publicly uploaded a Photoosphere, you’ll be able to see it in the app. The same goes for any indoor photograph.

When you open the app for the first time, you’ll go through three screens that tell you the app’s contents. Even after you’re signed in, the app provides helpful tips on how to use the app. Since Street View is a brand new app, it uses a whole new design language. It works differently from the Maps app.

The main screen of the application is divided into two parts. At the top, you’ll see a world map with points for areas with saturated Street View footage. Tap on any of them and you’ll zoom in. Spin around to explore. As you circle an area, you’ll see the results below will also be updated.

Tap the compass icon: When you’re exploring Street View in full screen, tap the icon Compass at the top right, and you can now control the 360-degree view with your phone’s movements. So if you move your phone to the left, Street View will also move left. It’s fun to explore places in this way.

Now, accessing Street View for a specific place is as easy as tapping the red dot once you’ve zoomed in on the place. As soon as you do that, the app will show cards for every Street View available in the area. Just tap a card to view it in full screen mode. Now you know what to do. Swipe to see what’s around you, and tap the arrows (if available) to move around.

How to discover places around you

While Google Street View cars aren’t running in all countries yet, that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see in countries like India. Thanks to the community-driven Photoosphere integration, there’s a lot to explore around.

Yes, the Street View app also allows you to add your own Panoramas. If you’ve been in Android land since ICS, or if you’ve ever used Google+, you know what they are and how they work.

You don’t need any special hardware. Just your phone camera will do. Though if you have a supported spherical camera like the Ricoh Theta S you can use that too.

To get started, tap Camera floating button at bottom right. The way this works is that you are asked to move the camera around and find the circle. The app takes multiple photos and stitches them together. Once done, you will be shown the final product. The images are not published automatically. So you can choose which ones to share with everyone once done.
