Life was going well until our smartphones started working. And then we started cursing it. Even if the problem is small, smartphones are such an important part of our lives that the problem seems to be the big deal.
However, some issues are serious, such as when Google Play Services is not working as intended. And so other apps don’t work either. When you open them you will get the error ‘This app won’t run unless you update Google Play services.’
For the uninitiated, Google Play Services is a pre-installed system app that updates apps from the Play Store. It also acts as a framework for Google and Google apps on your device. So if there’s any problem with Play Services, it can reflect in other apps as well. And finally, destroy your overall Android phone experience.
Now to fix the problem you need to update Play Services. But how does one do it? And what if it doesn’t update? To fix the problem, here we present you 7 solutions that will help you to solve your Google Play Services update problem.
Start.
1. Restart the phone
Words are not enough to explain the power of a simple reboot. So without thinking twice, restart your phone and check if that fixes the problem. You will be surprised how much this simple act can solve many problems.
2. Check the storage capacity
Normally, Google Play Services updates automatically in the background. Sometimes they may not work if your phone’s storage is full. It’s an area one rarely looks at, so check if you have some free space on your phone.
3. Set the correct date and time
Next, make sure the date and time on your phone is correct. To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to System.
Step 2: Tap Date & time. On the next screen, turn on Automatic Date & Time. If it is already on, turn it off and then on again.
4. Clear cache and data
This is also a well known method to fix update problems. All you need to do is clear cache for Play Services and Play Store. If the problem persists, try clearing the data for them as well.
Rest assured, clearing cache or data will not delete apps or delete data from your phone. However, clearing Play Store data will reset its settings to default.
To clear cache and data for Play Services, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open Settings on your phone and go to Applications/Application Manager.
Step 2: Under All Apps or System Apps (if available), look for Google Play Services. Touch it.
Step 3: Tap on Storage and press the Clear Cache button. Do the same for the Google Play Store.
Step 4: Restart your device. If the problem persists, tap Clear data/storage (as illustrated in step 3) for both Google Play Services and Play Store.
5. Enable Play Services
It’s possible that you or someone else using your device accidentally disabled Google Play Services while googling the settings. If that’s the case, then Play Services won’t update. To fix it, you need to enable Play Services.
For that, follow steps 1 and 2 of Clear Cache Solution mentioned above. Then, under Play Services, tap Enable. Only when it is disabled will you see the Enable option; otherwise you will see Off. Once enabled, restart your phone or tablet and Play Services will automatically update in the background. So wait a while and then try using the problematic app.
6. Disable Play Services
Well, don’t be surprised. You will uninstall another app if you have the same problem. Since Play Services is a system app, it cannot be uninstalled. That’s where disabling it goes into the image.
To disable it, follow steps 1 and 2 of Clear Cache method i.e. go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services. Here, tap on Disable.
If it’s grayed out, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open Settings and go to Security. It is available as Security & location or Lock screen & security or Security.
Step 2: Tap on Device administrator or Device administrator app. Sometimes it shows up in Advanced options.
Step 3: Turn off Find my device.
Step 4: Go to Google Play Services in the App. Now you should be able to disable it.
After turning it off, wait a while and then turn it back on. That will restore Play Services to factory settings and help you fix the problem.
7. Reset app preferences
Repeatedly resetting app preferences also helps to fix Play Services update issues. To do so, go to Phone Settings > System > Reset Options. Tap Reset app preferences.
Doing that won’t delete any data, but it will reset the settings to default. Know what to expect by resetting app preferences and other methods to do it.
8. Uninstall updates
If disabling seems like a daunting task, try uninstalling its updates.
To uninstall Play Services updates, go to Settings > Apps > Google Play Services. Tap the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner and select Uninstall update.
After uninstalling, give it some time to update it.
9. Update Google Play Services
There are two ways to update Google Play Services — from the Play Store and manually.
Update from Play Store
If you search for Google Play Services on the Play Store, you will rarely find this app. However, open it via the link and you will be taken to its page. Tap Update (if available).
Update Play services manually
To do that, you need to download the Play Services APK file and install it manually. Here are the steps:
Step 1: Download the APK file for the latest version of Google Play Services from a trusted source like APKMirror.com.
Step 2: Click on the downloaded file to install. You will be asked for permission to allow third-party apps to install other apps. Authorize and install Play Services.
Step 3: Reboot your phone and your problem should be fixed.
If the problem persists, download the previous version of the app instead of the new one. The update process will be slightly different on phones running MIUI.
Patience is the key to success
All of the above methods require patience. Since Play Services is a system app, it is updated in the background. So, except for manually updating Play Services, you must wait at least five minutes for your phone to complete the installation process.
