How to Save Chat History in Outlook.com Email – Guiding Tech

A few days ago, we discussed how to turn off saving chats while chatting in Gmail and prevent Gmail from saving chat history. However, enabling the feature can really come in handy at times when you need to refer to your chat messages to clarify things in the future.

Outlook.com, Gmail’s newest contender, also has this feature, but it’s disabled by default. Furthermore, since we can connect social media services like Facebook to Outlook.com, we can also save chat history for them and use it to our advantage in the future. So let’s see how we can enable this and save our chat messages on Outlook.com

Save IM history on Outlook

Step 1: Sign in to your Outlook.com inbox and click the gear icon in the top right corner. In the pull-down menu, click the link More mail settings to open Outlook.com mail settings.

Note: If you have not yet converted your Hotmail and Live email addresses to Outlook.com, you should do so at the earliest before running out of good email aliases.

Step 2: In Outlook.com mail settings, click on the option texting history in your Manage Account preferences.

Step 3: Here, change the setting to Save instant messages from No thanks and save it.

That’s it, from this point on, all your IM messages and conversations will be archived as soon as you log out or the chat becomes inactive. I tested this feature for Facebook and Windows Live Messenger in Outlook.com and it can keep chat logs for both.

Archived messages

Note: The folder’s messaging history will not appear as soon as you enable the setting. It will only appear after any of your chats go well or your friend logs out of the chat.

Once a chat is hosted on Outlook.com, you can treat it like an email and take corresponding actions.

Conclusion

Finally, after many years, an email service has dared to stand up to Gmail, and surprisingly it seems to be doing pretty well so far. With features like email aliases and social networking, I’ve started providing my Outlook.com email address as my contact information. How about you?
