Netflix already supports Dolby Atmos for Premium subscribers. If your home has the right equipment that supports Dolby Atmos, you can stream some movies on Netflix to enjoy a surround sound experience. But what about people viewing content on their smartphones? Or those who don’t have access to the latest multi-channel surround sound systems?
Netflix recognizes that many of the users viewing their content on TVs, smartphones, tablets, and computers do not have the Dolby Atmos experience. Netflix introduces Spatial Audio to subscribers for the best and cinema-like experience on any device. This post will explain what Spatial Audio on Netflix is.
What is spatial sound in Netflix?
Let’s say you like to watch Netflix on your Laptop, Tablet or Smartphone with your headphones plugged in. In that case, Spatial Audio will help simulate an enhanced surround sound experience when viewing content on the platform. This also applies to users who watch Netflix on their TV using a stereo speaker setup that doesn’t support Dolby Atmos. The company introduced this feature to Premium subscribers, who pay $19.99/month to enjoy more features like Dolby Vision support and more downloadable devices.
Netflix has partnered with Germany-based audio company Sennheiser to introduce AMBEO 2-Channel Surround virtualization technology as Spatial Audio on their platform. This first partnership brings Spatial Audio technology to over 700 titles on Netflix. Spatial Audio will provide an enhanced stereo sound experience on your conventional 2-channel speaker system.
To easily detect titles that support Spatial Audio, Netflix displays a Spatial Audio icon next to the title.
What are the benefits of spatial sound?
Let’s say you watch Netflix with your TV speakers, USB speakers attached to your laptop, or headphones plugged into your smartphone. Spatial Audio enhances your audio experience by presenting an immersive 2-channel mix as a drop-in replacement for stereo sound. You do not need to enable this feature separately. Spatial sound is automatically enabled if you are using any 2-channel stereo speaker setup.
Please note that this does not apply to Soundbars that support 5.1 surround sound or Dolby Atmos. If you want to use Spatial Audio with Head Tracking, you’ll need to use a compatible device such as an Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, or Google Pixel phone with Head Tracking enabled. With Spatial Audio, you don’t need to invest in a new Audio Video Receiver or Dolby Atmos soundbar to enjoy surround sound. Spatial Audio can simulate the same virtual surround sound output, if not exactly, that you enjoy with Dolby Atmos.
How to get spatial sound on smart TV
If you’re using a Smart TV that supports Dolby Atmos or 5.1 surround sound, you can still enable Spatial Audio in Netflix by changing a few sound settings. We are using Android TV as an example to show you the steps.
Step 1: Using the remote, open Android TV Settings using the Menu button. If there is a dedicated Menu button on your remote, use it.
Step 2: Select More from the list of options in the bottom right corner.
Step 3: Select Sound.
Step 4: Scroll down and select SPDIF Type.
Step 5: Select PCM as SPDIF Type.
Step 6: Close the menu and open Netflix on your Android TV.
You should now see the Spatial Audio logo next to the streaming title.
The same may apply if you have connected your Apple TV directly to your TV. You need to have PCM audio enabled on your TV to see the Spatial Audio icon on Netflix.
Using spatial sound on Netflix
Spatial Audio is a good addition for Netflix Premium subscribers who don’t want to invest in highly specified audio setups to watch content. But most importantly, the Premium plan gives you access to Dolby Vision and HDR content across the platform. If you don’t like watching Netflix on your TV, you can watch HDR content from the streaming platform on your Mac.
