I usually restart my computer to finish installing software or updating Windows. Opening the start menu and choosing to restart isn’t usually complicated, but there’s a much simpler way to do it. We have reviewed the native keyboard shortcuts of Windows 8 as well as those found in Windows 7. However, we can also create our own shortcuts for our own purposes.
The shortcuts we will be doing today involve shutting down, restarting, logging out, hibernating, and switching user accounts. We’ll create keyboard shortcuts for these commands and then assign a unique keyboard combination to each to make launching them really easy. You won’t need to open the start menu anymore to do these specific actions. Just enter your keystrokes and you will begin your journey.
Using the Shutdown command from the Command Line
There are many switches that can be used with turn off command, as you can see here with turn off /?:
Any of these commands can be run right from the command prompt. Example: enter shutdown / ERROR to log out.
Or you can open the graphical interface to shutdown and restart using shutdown / me request. This GUI is limited to two commands, though.
However, for quick and easy shutdown or restart, a keyboard shortcut can be implemented for these operations, which can then be associated with a shortcut. Enter the shortcut and voila – command executed! No need to open interface, start menu or command prompt. But first we need to create shortcuts.
Create shortcut
On desktop, right click anywhere and create a new shortcut from New > Shortcut.
Use any of the following commands for the location of the item.
To shutdown (as below):
shutdown/second
To sign out:
shutdown / ERROR
Restart:
shutdown /r
To hibernate:
shutdown /h
To switch users (without logging out):
rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
Then name the item something suitable, like Turn off for the first command.
Now right click on any shortcut you just created and select Property. Then make sure Shortcut tab is selected and direct your focus to Shortcut keys part.
Click on this text box and enter any key combination by doing it on the keyboard. For example, click this text box and type the keys Ctrl + Alt + ERROR to define such a shortcut.
Save the changes. Now any time you just enter Ctrl + Alt + ERROR to lock the workstation.
Note: Windows key + ERROR will also lock a workstation regardless of which batch file is created. However, other keyboard shortcuts require assigning their own unique keys.
Conclusion
Any program can be assigned a keyboard shortcut as we discussed here. Creating shortcuts for repetitive tasks like this is useful to launch the desired command. Furthermore, creating a shortcut for the command can be the fastest way to perform actions.
