Do you enjoy playing games on Windows 10? Do you hate experiencing in-game lag right when you’re about to kill someone? Some of my friends have complained about how the new Borderless Display Mode, enabled by default in Windows 10, causes lag.
The new borderless display mode is designed by Microsoft to allow users to quickly change tabs, improve performance, and use Focus Assist with ease while playing their favorite games. It replaces the old Fullscreen Exclusive Mode.
Instead of increasing gaming performance, it causes FPS stutter for many users. Redicilous? A setting called Optimize Full Screen controls this new mode. When enabled, you’ll see your games open in hybrid view where the game is running in borderless fullscreen. And it’s not just limited to games, I’ve experienced it with several Windows apps.
Let’s see how you can disable it.
1. Disable full screen optimization apps
This method is more suitable to disable Full Screen Optimization for a specific game. I would recommend it to Windows 10 users who experience lag when playing FPS games like CS:GO and PUBG. Depending on the make and model of your computer and game settings, disabling the aforementioned option may give you a glitch-free experience.
Launch the file browser by clicking My Computer on your desktop or pressing the keyboard shortcut CTRL + E. You can now locate the game installation folder. By default, it is always located in the C drive, but you may have selected a different folder during the installation process. Find the game’s .EXE file to launch it.
I’m doing this for Tencent’s PUBG because it’s been slow and doesn’t open correctly for me. Right click on the launcher file and select Properties. Alternatively, you can use the keyboard shortcut ALT+ENTER to display the file’s properties. Click the Compatibility tab and click the Disable full screen optimization check box. Click Apply and OK when you’re done.
If you are running Windows 10 with multiple user accounts and want to change the full screen optimization settings for all users, then in the Compatibility tab, first click Change settings for all users .
Now select Disable full screen optimization and save all settings.
You can do this for any game that lags and causes problems in fullscreen. Note that the lag is more obvious and frequently reported for apps that are not downloaded and installed from the official Windows 10 store. Now open the game and check if you still experience lag and if the window opens in fullscreen exclusively.
2. Registry editor for all apps
Changing individual fullscreen optimization settings for each game can be time consuming and cumbersome. If you want to do it for all the games installed on your system, Registry Editor is your best bet.
Tap the Windows button on your keyboard and search for regedit. Click the Registry Editor option to launch the application.
You have to find the string GameConfigStore which you can easily find by looking at the following folder structure details.
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore
Then you’re looking for a DWORD entry named GameDVR_FSEBehaviorMode.
Here, the default value is ‘0’ which means fullscreen optimization is enabled. To disable it, you will have to right-click on the entry and click Modify.
In the pop-up, change the Value Data from ‘0’ to ‘2’ and click OK when done. That will apply to your fullscreen optimization settings system-wide, so you don’t have to do it manually for each game.
3. Disable Game bar and Captures
Here’s an extra tip for gamers who are tired of constant stuttering while playing Overwatch or other high-performance games. Launch Windows Settings by pressing the Windows + I keyboard shortcut or by using the search bar. Click Games here.
In the Game bar, you need to turn off the option Record game clips, screenshots, and Broadcast using Game bar.
While doing so, you should also turn off background recording if you don’t want to record and share your gameplay skills with others. You should only enable this feature when you need to record a video or take a screenshot. Why waste precious resources on features we don’t need or want?
Click Captures, and under Background Recording, uncheck the ‘Record in the background while I’m playing a game’ option if it’s not already off.
Let the game begin
Although Microsoft acknowledged the bugs and made some changes to the game settings in the October update, some users are still experiencing this issue. Disabling these settings is also a good idea if you’re running the game on a low-spec machine.
Enabling the installation may work for programs available through the Windows Store. However, many people use the ones they download from elsewhere. And enforcing fullscreen optimization will just make those programs behave oddly. So it’s entirely up to you — whether you want to enable the setting for every app, or leave it disabled.
