Switch To iPad Interface In Chrome By Changing User Agent String

You’ve heard of the iPad, right? And chances are you want to get one soon. Well, why not check out how your favorite websites will look on your iPad before you even get your hands on the actual device. It can be done by changing your browser’s user agent string to that of your iPad.

You can change your browser’s user agent string and enjoy the iPad look right inside it. Changing the user agent string in Firefox and Safari is easy. But Chrome doesn’t provide a direct method to do that.

Here is a step-by-step guide to change the user string in Chrome and get the iPad look.

1. Right click on the chrome shortcut and select Properties.

Chrome2 . Properties

2. Now go to the “Shortcuts” tab.

Chrome properties shortcut

3. In the Target field you will find this text written (where “username” is your windows username):

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

Replace the text with the text shown below by copying the text and pasting it in the destination field (make sure you have your real windows username after C:\Users\.. ).

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe -user-agent=”Mozilla/5.0(iPad; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/531.21.10 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.4 Mobile/7B314 Safari/531.21.10″

4. Click OK.

Now open your Chrome browser. Open sites like Gmail, Twitter, YouTube have released their iPad versions. Here’s a screenshot of Gmail in Chrome, which is currently exactly the same as you’ll find on an iPad.

If you want to revert back to the original browser then you need to replace the user agent string with the target location. Go to Chrome’s properties panel as mentioned in Steps 1 and 2 and replace the user agent string with this text.

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

If you still get the same iPad look and feel, clear your browser cache and it should be fine.

So do you already have an iPad? How was the experience using it? Let us know in the comments section.
