User accounts in Windows allow you to save personal information and isolate your work environment from other users on the same computer. You can set your password so that no other user can randomly access your account.
At the time of password creation, Windows offers the option of password hinting. In case you forget your password, you can go to the hint view to get a clue about your password.
But imagine the worst case scenario when you try to log in to your computer after days (maybe months) and you forget your password. Even the password hint doesn’t seem to help. So what now? Oh, and your account is the only administrator account.
According to Microsoft.
If you forget your administrator password and don’t have a password reset disk or another administrator account, you won’t be able to reset your password. If there are no other user accounts on the computer, you won’t be able to sign in to Windows and will need to reinstall Windows.
Windows gives you the option to reset your password with the help of a password reset disk. You can create this disc on a USB flash drive or on a floppy disk.
Remember we are talking about personal computers here. On networked PCs in a domain, the system administrator can handle this.
Note: You cannot create a password reset disc on a CD or DVD.
To create a password reset disk:
1. Click the “Start Button” and enter the user account in the search box. Press the Enter key.
2. Plug the USB drive or floppy disk into your computer. On the User Accounts window, click “create password reset disk” in the left pane.
3. The Forgot Password Wizard opens. Click next”.
4. Select the drive where you want to create the password reset disk from the drop-down menu. Click Next”
5. Enter your current password in the box provided and click “Next”.
6. Disk creation will begin. You can see the progress on the window. It will take a few seconds to create the disc.
7. After completing the process, click “Finish”.
Your password reset disk has been created. Now keep this disc in a safe place so you can find it easily when you need it.
How to recover password with password reset disk
In case you don’t remember your password, you can use the password reset disk to reset it. Here is the method to perform this task:

2. It will open “Password Reset Wizard”. Click next”.
3. Now select the password lock disk from the drop-down menu. Click next”.
4. Enter a new password in the “Type a new password” box. Enter again in the box below to confirm. You can also enter a new password hint. After filling in all the information, click “Next”.
5. Click “Finish”. Your password is reset. You can now enter a new password to log in to your user account.
Note: If you are the administrator of the computer, you can obviously reset the password for another user through the user accounts panel. But this method will create problems. Other users will lose access to encrypted files, encrypted e-mail messages, and stored passwords for websites. However, if you reset your password using the password reset disk, there is no risk involved.
