Any virtual assistant is incomplete if it does not support prompts. Imagine you tell your assistant to set a reminder and it says, “Sorry, I can’t do that.” Thankfully, the Google Assistant supports that, along with other cool functions.
All you need to do is say ‘Okay, Google reminds me’ followed by what you need to be prompted for along with a time or place. The Google Assistant will notify you at the exact time (or place) by sending a notification on your device. However, it uses the default notification sound on your device, which is usually the bass not for important things like reminders.
I’ve missed Google Assistant prompts multiple times for this particular reason. Here I will show you how to change the Assistant reminder sound to any sound of your choice so you don’t miss any reminders.
Start!
Change the reminder sound
To do so, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch the Google app on your device and tap on the More option present in the bottom right corner.
Step 2: Tap Settings followed by Notifications.
Step 3: Under Notifications, tap Explore.
Step 4: Here, tap Ringtone under Priority Notifications and select the alert tone of your choice.
For devices running Android 8.0 Oreo or later, you won’t find an option for Priority Ringtones or Notifications. You’ll have a ‘Get notified about’ label instead. Below that, tap Reminders. Then tap on Sound and choose the sound to your liking. You can also enable vibration mode.
Similarly, you can change notifications for other categories on phones running the Android 9.0 Pie update.
Edit Reminders
To view or edit an existing reminder, you can speak to the Assistant or check the reminder yourself. Here are the steps for both.
Using Assistant
To do so, launch Google Assistant and ask it to show your reminders. You can use commands like what is my reminder, show me my reminder, what is my next reminder, etc.
Use Settings
With the help of settings, you can see all your past and current reminders. Here’s how to test it.
Step 1: Open the Google app and tap on the More option at the bottom.
Step 2: Tap Settings followed by the Settings option present in Google Assistant.
Step 3: Go to the Services tab and tap on Reminders.
Step 4: Here you will find all the reminders. Tap any reminder to edit its name, time, frequency, etc. You can even delete the reminder.
Set a reminder on the screen
Sometimes, while working on the computer, you may want to make a quick note of some things to do later. Normally, you would pick up your phone and ask your Assistant to create a reminder. However, you can also easily create reminders on your computer. When you do, the reminder will also appear on your phone.
To create a desktop reminder, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch Google Chrome browser.
Step 2: Type a query set reminder or remind me in the address bar and press Enter.
Step 3: You will get the Set Reminder box. Enter the required details like title, date, time etc. Then click on the ‘Remind me on Google Now’ link.
That’s it. To verify if a reminder is set, ask the Assistant on your device about your reminder. You can then edit or delete the reminder from your phone.
Note:
View Assistant prompts on PC
You can also view, edit, and delete Assistant reminders on your desktop. Since Assistant reminders are linked to Google Calendar, you’ll have to use it.
For that, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch Google Calendar using any browser on your computer.
Step 2: Sign in with your Google account.
Step 3: On Calendar, tap the reminder that you want to edit or delete.
Step 4: A pop-up window will open. Tap the Edit or Delete icon to take the required action. You can also mark the reminder as done if you don’t want the Google Assistant to repeat it again.
Google, you can do it
Google still needs to do a lot more when it comes to reminders and other apps. Sure, Assistant integration is important, but it would be nice to have a dedicated reminder app with some features. For instance, the current Assistant lacks features like duplicating reminders, color coding, link support, etc.
Recently, Google launched a dedicated task management application – Google Tasks. Completely different from Google Keep, it has been mistaken as an app for setting reminders. However, the truth is that the new Google Tasks app lacks reminders and doesn’t integrate with Google Assistant or Calendar either.
Hopefully this year Google will release an app dedicated to reminders.
