How To Get Pushbullet Working with Safari and Mac

If you are using an Android phone, life without Pushbullet is meaningless. Android apps can do a lot. With the Chrome extension, you can view notifications, reply to SMS, share clipboard history between two devices, and more.

The only problem is that Pushbullet doesn’t love the Apple-verse as much as Windows and Android. Their product page lists the Safari extension and Mac app as “coming soon”. But that placeholder has been there for months. Maybe it’s time to face the truth. The developers at Pushbullet are so busy building great things, and Chrome is such a viable vehicle for them, that they don’t want to focus their energies on other things.

That sucks for the rest of us who own Macs and for some reason (battery life, stability, privacy) choose Safari over Chrome.

But thanks to third-party developers, that vulnerability is a bit easier to break. Today we’re going to talk about a really simple third-party extension for Safari and a full-featured third-party Pushbullet app for Mac.

Bullet for Safari

The Pushbullet extension for Safari is basic compared to the Chrome extension. You can’t view notifications, reply to SMS, or even send files.

All you can do is send links and notes. That’s it. Oh, and you’ll need to authenticate the extension using the API key available in Account section on the Pushbullet website.

PushPal for Mac

Now here’s what it’s all about. PushPal is an unofficial Mac client for Pushbullet. If Pushbullet makes their own Mac app, this could be what it looks like. However, all those native features come for a price: $2.99 on the Mac App Store.

But for a small price, you get a nice looking app that lists all the push you’ve ever sent across all your devices. You can view pushes, resend them, etc.

An easy way to send links, files, notes, etc. from your Mac to any device connected to Pushbullet – Windows, iPhone or Android.

After you have turned on Notification Mirroring in the Android app, you’ll see a notification on your Mac. Suppressing the notification here will do the same on the app.

PushPal will also allow you to reply to SMS.

Recently: I have found Pushbullet to be the easiest way to sync clipboard between Windows and Android. With PushPal, you can also have the same feature between Mac and Android (no word on iPhone updates).

How PushPal can get better

If you are a heavy user of Pushbullet, then PushPal is totally worth the $3 investment. But I think it could be better, especially the way it handles file sending. Developers, I hope you’re reading this.

PushPal has a menu bar widget but it’s not really useful. It will provide a drop-down list of the most recent pushes. Also, dragging a file to the menu bar will give you the option to choose the device you want to push the file to. No need to launch app for it. Some sort of general shortcut to send the web page you’re visiting to one device would also be appreciated.

How would you improve Pushbullet?

Pushbullet is one of the fastest growing apps I’ve seen on Android. How will you make it better? Let us know in the comments below.
