Apple iPhone’s camera performance is rated as one of the best in the world. From casual daylight photography to slow motion video recording, it lets you do a lot. However, the details of photos and videos are not easily obtained. To check a photo’s details, such as size, resolution, or other metadata, you’ll have to rely on third-party apps, at least for now.
These third-party applications allow you to easily view image details. All you need to do is a few taps and the data will be right in front of you. Furthermore, you will be able to see the exact location where you took the photo.
So, if you are looking for quick and easy ways to view the details of a photo or image on your iPhone, here are some third-party apps that will allow you to do so. We also have a clever workaround, so don’t forget to read to the end.
Note: You will have to grant the necessary permissions to the aforementioned apps to see all the details.
1. Metaphor
Metapho is one of those simple apps that lets you see all the metadata of your photos on your phone’s gallery. In addition to information such as size and resolution, it also allows you to view other information related to the camera, software or location.
In addition, you can also view advanced details such as color information, GPS data, and enhanced EXIF data.
You can open images directly from Metapho. Or, you can go to Photos and tap the Share icon. Once you’re on the Share Sheet, just scroll down until you see Metapho. Tap it to see details. And that’s it. You can see all the details without leaving the Photos app.
Metapho works with almost all image files, including Live Photos. However, the video details are very sparse. You will only see the size, resolution, time, position, and model of the camera.
As noted earlier, the application presents the details in a simple format, making it easy to understand all the fields.
2. EXIF metadata
Another photo app that lets you check image details is the aptly named EXIF Metadata app. This also allows you to edit image metadata. Edit the image details that go into the image if you want to remove the location data and other details before sharing the photo with friends and colleagues.
To access the image details, you need to find the app in the Share Sheet and tap on it. All important details like shutter speed, file size, resolution and location are displayed right on top.

EXIF metadata works with image files such as panoramas, live photos, and portraits. It converts HEIC image files to JPG before proceeding. However, it doesn’t seem to work for video files.
On the other hand, if you want to edit the metadata, open the image directly through the EXIF app and hit the Edit button at the top.
3. HashPhotos
HashPhotos is more than just your average EXIF data viewer. The app itself is a complete photo editor and manager. So it could be the right choice if you are looking for a multi-purpose application that can do it all.
Unlike the ones above, you can’t view photo details from the Photos app. Instead, you’ll have to open the photo on the HashPhotos app.
To see details like phone model, date, size, and location, swipe up. But if you want to see advanced details like Orientation, pixel height etc, you will have to upgrade to the paid version.
Like Metapho, HashPhotos works with most image types, including video and live video. But again, the details for the video are quite less and include only size, resolution and frame rate, among other things.
Reward: Through iOS Shortcuts
If you’re not comfortable with sharing your photos and videos with third-party apps, the built-in Shortcuts app on iOS should be able to help you get basic photo insights. The drawback is that you won’t be able to see all the merge details. However, if you want to see the size or position, this method proves useful.
Step 1: Open the Shortcuts app and tap the Plus icon in the upper right corner to create a new shortcut. Next, tap Add action.
Step 2: Search for ‘Get Image Details’. Click to select.
Next, tap on the Album text and select a specific variable. In our case, we chose to use File Size.
Step 3: Click on the Image text and select Import Shortcut from the drop-down menu.
Step 4: Once done, tap the Plus icon to add the action again. Now, search for ‘Show Notifications’ and add it.
On the next screen, tap ‘Hello World’ to change the variable. Select File Size as shown in the screenshot above. And yes, don’t forget to remove the Hello World text.
Once that’s done, tap Next and give your Shortcut a new name. We changed the name to Deets.
The newly created shortcut will be displayed on the Homepage of Shortcuts. Click to open it. Next, turn on the Show in Share Sheet button and save it.
From now on, every time you need to see the image size (or other details), open a photo and click on the Shortcut icon on the Share Sheet will have all the details shown above.
Check photo details often
In addition to the above, you can also use Google Photos to view image details, i.e. if you have the app installed. All you need to do is open any photo and swipe up.
