Remote play explanation

With the release of the PS Vita not too long ago, Sony has really ramped up the power and capabilities of its portable gaming console, formerly its much-loved one.

Naturally, all this extra power and functionality allows for more than just playing quality console games. In fact, one of the most impressive (and simply amazing) features you can take advantage of on your PS Vita if you also have a PS3 is remote media and game play on your PS Vita.

Let’s take a look at how to connect your PS3 to your PS Vita and everything you can and can’t do with this compact feature.

Register/Pair your PS Vita with your PS3

To pair PS Vita with PS3, you need to register it first. This is a one-time only thing, so if you haven’t already, follow the instructions below. If not, just ignore them.

If you haven’t subscribed to PS Vita on your PS3

Step 1: From the XMB on your PS3, go to Setting menu. There, select Remote play settings from the available options and then select Device registration.

Hot Tip: You can also remotely turn on your PS3 using your PS Vita by selecting Remote start options from the settings mentioned above. That way you won’t even need to be near your PS3 to access it.

Content ready to play remotely

See what content is available to you on PS Vita via Remote Play and what you can and can’t do with it.

Game

Some games are available to play remotely on the PS Vita. However, most of them are classic PSN and PSone games. Only five retail PS3 games are available to play remotely. That is:

  • God of War Collection
  • Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection
  • PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
  • Robots; Notes
  • Tokyo jungle

We’ll update the list as more PS3 games start to offer this feature. For a full list of other (non-physical) titles, check here.

To start playing any of these via remote play, simply insert the disc into your PS3 (unless you own the digital versions) and start the game from your PS Vita. You even have the option to customize the controls and image quality.

Video

When it comes to video, you can use Remote Play on your PS Vita to play videos stored on the media server, as well as flash media and videos stored on your PS3.

Naturally, Blu-ray movies and any other type of protected content are not supported by Remote Play.

image

Contrary to what happens with video files, you can view most image file types on your PS Vita via Remote Play, including all major formats like PNG, JPG, etc.

Photo

Alternatively, you can also view images from remote media servers, which is pretty cool.

Music

Just like photos, music that can be played via Remote Play from your PS3 on your PS Vita is virtually unrestricted as long as it’s not DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected. Plus, if you have songs or playlists that have been ported to your PS3, they’re perfectly playable via Remote Play on your Vita.

Music

Hot Tip: When playing remotely on PS Vita, you can go to PS3 settings and choose that as Audio output optional, that way you can enjoy PS Vita games and media with the sound coming out of your home audio system.

Others

Like with the various vehicles mentioned above, other important options from your PS3 are available through Remote Play on PS Vita. Some of these include PS3 settings, browsers, some video applications, Friend menus and more.

And there you have it! If you have a PS3 and PS Vita, you can do a lot of cool things with them using Remote Play. And all of them without wasting any precious space on your PS Vita memory card.
