How to Take a Screenshot of Netflix Using Mac and Windows

Lots of new content is added to Netflix every week. There are times when watching a movie or an episode of a series, we fall in love with a scene and feel like sharing a screenshot of that scene. But if you tried that, all you get is a black screen.

Fortunately, there are ways to take screenshots on Netflix. In this post, we will show you how to take screenshots on Netflix using Windows and Mac.

The steps in this post are for the web version of Netflix on the desktop. If you have a Mac or Windows system, you can take a screenshot using the following steps. For users of the Netflix mobile app, there is no simple solution. DRM (Digital Rights Management) rules are very strict for mobile devices to prevent anyone from pirating content from OTT platforms.

Take a screenshot of Netflix on Mac

You can easily take screenshots on Netflix using the native screen capture tool on your Mac. But there is a downside. If you’re using Netflix on Safari, you can take a screenshot of the Netflix home page. However, if you try capturing a scene from the playback window, you will get a black screen in the screenshot.

Thankfully, this doesn’t happen in other browsers. We recommend downloading the Google Chrome browser to take screenshots on Netflix.

After downloading Google Chrome, follow these steps.

Step 1: Launch Google Chrome browser.

Step 2: At the homepage interface, click on the three dots in the top right corner.

Step 3: Click Settings from the menu.

Step 4: In the search bar, type Hardware acceleration.

You should see the option appear on your screen.

Step 5: Disable the option that says Use hardware acceleration when available.

Step 6: Click Relaunch.

Step 6: After the browser restarts, open a new tab and visit the Netflix homepage.

Step 7: Sign in to your Netflix account.

Step 8: Start playing that title or episode and go to the favorite scene you want to capture.

Step 9: Pause playback and press Command+Shift+3 to take a screenshot of that scene.

Here’s how you can easily take screenshots on Netflix using Google Chrome on your Mac. You need to make sure that you have disabled Hardware Acceleration on Chrome browser.

But why doesn’t Safari allow screenshots on Netflix? One reason could be that Apple is supporting platforms like Netflix to prevent piracy. Since Safari is a native MacOS app, it won’t allow screenshots on Netflix.

Take Screenshots of Netflix on Windows

Windows also provides a separate screenshot tool. But you may notice the same black screen error when taking a screenshot. Again, we’ll be using the browser instead of the native Netflix app. With the browser on Windows, there are two ways to take a screenshot of Netflix.

1. Disable Hardware Acceleration

Just like Mac, you can try this method to get rid of the black screen error on your Windows system. The steps to turn off Hardware Acceleration remain the same for Chrome.

Please note that this method may not work on some systems with different GPUs. But still what harm in trying? Follow these steps.

Step 1: Open the Netflix homepage in Chrome.

Step 2: Sign in to your Netflix account.

Step 3: Start playing that title or episode and go to the favorite scene you want to capture.

Step 4: Pause playback and press Windows Key + Shift + S to enable the Snipping Tool panel.

Step 5: Take a screenshot of the scene and save it to your system.

You can then save the screenshot to the respective folder or paste it into the Paint app after launching.

2. Activate the sandbox environment

If you are unable to take a screenshot using the first method, here is the second. However, this one requires you to go through a few rounds. To get started, you need to activate the Sandbox environment on your Windows computer.

A Sandbox environment is basically a dedicated space where applications can run inside an isolated environment. This space does not affect any other functionality in your system. You don’t have to download any separate apps to activate it. Thankfully, Windows 10 and 11 now offer the Windows Sandbox feature.

Check if you are using Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise, build version 18305 or Windows 11. Only proceed after having checked and verified that. Follow these steps.

Step 1: To enable Windows Sandbox, type Turn Windows features on or off in the search bar.

Step 2: Click the option prompted to access Windows Features.

Step 3: In the Windows Features menu, scroll down and enable Windows Sandbox.

Step 4: Click OK

A new tab will open on your desktop.

Step 5: To apply the new changes, click Restart now.

Wait for your system to reboot.

Step 6: From the homepage, search Windows Sandbox.

Step 7: Click on the suggested program.

You should now see the Windows Sandbox application on your desktop.

Step 8: In the Windows Sandbox application, click the Microsoft Edge browser icon.

Step 9: Open the Netflix homepage and log in to your account.

Step 10: Play a title and go to the scene you want to screenshot.

Step 11: Press Windows Key + PrtScn to take a screenshot.

If you’re using Windows 10 home or an earlier version of Windows, you can download the Sandboxie-Plus app to take a screenshot. However, you will need to set Google Chrome as your default browser.

Step 1: After installing Sandboxie, launch the application.

Step 2: Once the application opens, right-click on DefaultBox.

Step 3: Select Run and then select Default Web Browser

That will start Google Chrome in a Sandbox environment.

You can check the same by looking at the yellow border around the browser.

Step 4: Open Netflix and sign in to your account.

Step 5: Choose a title.

Start playing that title or episode and go to your favorite scene you want to capture.

Step 6: Pause playback and press Windows Key + Shift + S to turn on the Snipping Tool panel.

Step 7: Take a screenshot of your desired screen and save it to your system.

Now you can share the screenshot without any black screen error. Of course, this requires you to have enough space on your hard drive or SSD to run the Sandboxie app without a hitch.

Share your favorite moment

Whether you want to share your favorite scenes or just some screenshots to create a meme, there’s no need to take complicated screenshots of Netflix content. But that’s for a reason, to limit piracy. Of course, there are a number of free and paid apps that claim to do the job with a click or two, most of them pumping ads or rarely working properly.
