Warning: Stop Buying iOS Apps That Claim to Lock Other Apps

There are no iPhone or iPad apps on the App Store that have the ability to lock other apps. This is a system level limitation in iOS. Unlike Android, where apps can access core data like file system and system level data, that is not possible on iOS.

Every app on iOS runs in its own environment, its own silo. An application cannot access data from another application, cannot receive or send data directly (except: Extensions), and certainly cannot set barriers. That’s something iOS won’t let you do.

Did you catch all of that? Good. So now stop buying iOS apps that promise to give you this functionality, almost implying reality without explicitly stating it. It’s a hoax and it doesn’t appear that they violate Apple’s review guidelines.

Culprit

The premise for this article originates from the top paid app currently on the Indian App Store. It’s an app called Passcode for WhatsApp ($0.99). Looks like an app that will protect WhatsApp with a password doesn’t it? The screenshot in the WhatsApp UI clone description didn’t help.

Only in the last line of the second paragraph do they mention – “This is a standalone app and cannot add passcodes nor control any third party apps.” sparkling.

The truth is that no one reads the app descriptions. Only tech writers do. And if I’m being completely honest, not all.

As proof, I present user reviews.

What the app does is let you share conversations (one by one) to a “private” email address (not to mention security details) and then import the conversation into the app. , the conversation itself is password protected.

Data lockers are legal

While an app cannot lock other apps, it can lock content stored within the app itself. So if you see data lock for iPhone and iPad, feel free to use them. Even Dropbox supports passcode protection.

victims

It is important to read reviews and descriptions before purchasing an app. The iOS app store does a good job at preventing spam and threatening apps, but things like this still seep in.

Vulnerability: I should also mention that if you’re jailbroken you can get the app lock functionality using some jailbreak tweaks.

morality

iOS is a closed system. An application cannot protect data from other applications. However, an app can add a cryptographic key to its own data. So don’t buy apps that imply they’ll help you protect, clean, or monitor data from other apps on iOS.
