How to Set up Apple Music on iOS and iTunes

Apple Music is more than just another music streaming service. It’s a complete overhaul of the Music app on iOS devices and everything music-related in the Apple ecosystem. It’s a new app that includes 30 million songs to stream, your current music collection, 24/7 radio, man-made and algorithmically generated stations, and a social network. Small group of artists. We’ve covered Apple Music in detail here.

And that’s a lot of stuff put into one app. If you are new, you may be confused when trying to find your way. But don’t worry, we’re here to hold your hand throughout the process.

Set up Apple Music

Once you’ve updated your iPhone or iPad to iOS 8.4, you’ll see a new Music app with a brand new, colorful icon. On desktop, you need to update iTunes to 12.2 to get access to Apple Music.

When you launch the app, you’ll be greeted by the Apple Music intro screen. If you don’t understand, click File icon in the top left and select Join Apple Music.

From the splash screen, choose the plan you want – personal or Family, sign in with your Apple ID, agree to the terms, and you’re in.

Now, Apple will ask you about the genre and type of music you’re interested in. Tap the bubble to see what kind of music you like. Tap it twice if you really like it, and most importantly, remove the bubble if you don’t like that genre of music (currently Apple Music won’t recommend those types of albums to you).

Next, you will be asked to choose an artist. To perform the same drilling operation, tap Finished and you are in.

Now, gradually, you will see five tabs appear at the bottom of the application. And based on your input and the type of music you have in your library, Apple will populate playlists and albums For you part. In my experience, the For you the part was discovered above. Lately, I’ve been catching up on old rock bands, and since I picked up Pink Floyd and The Rolling Stones the first recommended playlist I got was “Best of ’60s Psychedelic Rock”. Perfect.

For you

What is the meaning of tabs?

My Music: This is where all my pre-update content is located. Your local library, iCloud Music Library content, content you’ve purchased from the iTunes store, and content you’ve added My music from apple music. This includes all songs, playlists and more.

New: This is the place to chat if you want to discover new music. It doesn’t have to be “new” new music. You can switch between genres and see all new songs and albums. Also, this is where you’ll find great playlists by Apple employees and magazines like Pitchfork, etc.

Connect: This is Apple’s strange attempt at creating a social network for artists. This is where artists will share updates and exclusive content.

How does streaming + Your Music + iCloud Music Library work?

iCloud Music Library is similar to Apple’s iTunes Match service but integrates directly with Apple Music. Everything other than streaming is covered by iCloud Music Library. If you want to download songs from Apple Music for offline use, you’ll need to enable this feature.

The main feature of iCloud Music Library is that it allows users to scan all the music they currently have on their iOS desktop/device and upload it to Apple Music. This happens in two ways. If Apple Music already has that song/album, it will be added right away My music on all your other devices. Otherwise, Apple Music will upload the song, and it will now be in iCloud (that is, until you sign up for Apple Music).

Depending on the size of your music library, the upload/match can take hours. Currently, the service will only match 25,000 songs (excluding content you’ve purchased from iTunes) but the limit will be raised to 100,000 songs when iOS 9 launches.

If you’re only interested in streaming and don’t really care about having music locally on all your devices, please don’t use iCloud Music Library. Also, currently, many users are having issues with iCloud Music Library especially those who also have iTunes Match enabled. Reports include duplicates, playlist errors, and metadata issues including loss of album art.

You can turn off iCloud Music Library by going to Interest -> overview on your Mac and from Setting -> Music on your iOS device. There is also an option to update the word library Document -> Library menu on your Mac.

When iCloud Music Library finishes updating, you’re done. All your music will be available to stream anywhere. And you can also download songs for offline use.

Apple Music without DRM: Unlike the iTunes store and the iTunes Match service, songs you download from Apple Music are DRM-free. That makes sense because you don’t buy them, nor rent them until your subscription expires. But the problem is if you have a DRM-free song that you uploaded to Apple Music and then re-downloaded it – that song has just been converted to Apple’s 256 KBPS AAC DRM’d format. This is an issue right now that we hope Apple will address in future updates.

How to unsubscribe

Apple Music is free for 3 months, and if you’re not sure if you want to continue paying for the service (it renews automatically), there’s a way to turn off the subscription.
