The word automation was widespread in the 1930s when industries finally saw a series of automated machines that could perform work that once required a human. Now, we use it as a general term for whatever we do on the computer to save us time. And, of course, smartphones are computers.
You will find complex automation software on Android like Tasker that will follow the exact steps as you described, completely without your supervision. They will go on their own from calling to completion. On iOS, there’s Workflow trying to make the most of iOS’s closed ecosystem.
But Workflow is another kind of automation. Because usually it’s you who is calling it. On the other hand, IFTTT is fully automated automation, usually limited to the web. You create “recipes” that are simply instructions where If X happens, Then do Y. And over the years, IFTTT has become the most preferred automation system. Now, they are taking it a step further.
By taking it X part of the equation and place it in your hand. So now it is you who perform an action that causes the reaction you have programmed.
Today, we are going to talk about Do Note and how it can be extremely useful to quickly take notes, tasks and send them to services like Evernote, Dropbox, Todoist, etc.
Do Camera and Do Button: Ashish talked about Do Button. Check out his guide here. And I introduced Do Camera, a great companion app to Do Note.
For a productive netizen who uses the above tools to manage their work and personal life, Do Note (available for both Android and iOS) is a must-have. It will save you a lot of time.
Get Started with a Grocery/To-Do List/Idea Notes
The best way to realize the value of the powerful automation behind Do Note is to use it to do the things you do regularly. For you, it could be adding an item to your existing grocery list in Evernote, Dropbox, or Todoist.
Normally, you need to open Evernote, find the grocery list note, tap Editor, scroll to the bottom, and then enter the add-on. But if you’ve configured a recipe in Do Note to add an item to your Grocery list note, all you need to do is open the Do Note app, swipe to the recipe, type, and tap into the button. It’s a lot faster in real life.
Above you’ll see two sped-up GIFs of me creating a new note in Evernote. The app on the left uses the classic Evernote app. The one on the right uses the Do Note formula. As you can see, the Do Note app is much faster and simpler to use.
And it can be any kind of to-do list or idea list. I have a recipe for quickly adding an article idea to my Idea notes in Evernote so it doesn’t get forgotten later.
Below I talked about how Do Note works, and if you want to jump directly to the super useful Do Note recipes, scroll to the last section.
How do notes work?
If you are familiar with IFTTT, most of the logic will be forward. There are recipes that you need to configure. You’ll find them in the app itself. You will need to connect to available “Channels”, which are apps and services.
The way Do Note is different from any other app is the way it works. When you open the app, you’ll see a blank pane with just a button in the middle, and the keyboard is on. The recipe name will flash for a moment. It’s a carousel, so swipe right/left to see more of the recipes you’ve set up. That’s all there is. No lists, no menus, no hierarchy, nothing.
Since the app is so simple, you’ll have to make sure you don’t overdo it with the recipes, or else they’ll get lost in the pile and you’ll waste time looking for them. In fact, until a few weeks ago, Do Note was limited to only 3 active recipes. You now have access to unlimited recipes but you should only use 6-8 of the many possible recipes.
Also, to make things easier, there is a widget for both Android and iOS. On Android, you’ll see arrow buttons to scroll between the available formulas. Tap one to go straight to the recipe.
How to use Note
When you open the app, tap Recipe at the bottom right. You will see all the activated formulas here. Touch + to browse for more recipes. When you find something you like, just tap Add button.
You can also edit recipes. And, of course, like IFTTT, you can start fresh and create recipes from scratch.
