Sumatra PDF, a Small PDF Reader You Can Carry in Thumb Drive

It took me five seconds to download the compressed file of Sumatra PDF, a free portable PDF and ebook reader. Compare that to 30 minutes to download the Adobe Reader installer. I just checked…Sumatra PDF is taking up about 4MB of my hard drive space. Adobe as self grown on 152 MB.

Of course, the Davids of the PDF world can’t be compared to the Goliaths like Adobe when it comes to head-to-head. I just started with it so I can illustrate the appeal of lightweight mobile software and do their core jobs well.

Sumatra PDF is an open source viewer for Windows (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7). You can use it to open PDF, DjVu, EPUB, XPS, CHM, CBZ and CBR and MOBI files, including pretty much all popular eBook formats. You can also preview LaTeX documents (an academic format). The portable installation of Sumatra PDF is a single file without any dependencies. That makes it perfect to be carried around in a USB drive. That’s why you’ll see it as part of many mobile app bundles like Mobile Apps and LiberKey.

Sumatra PDF is very flexible and opens to display a clean and simple interface. Here are some key features the mobile PDF reader brings to the table:

Cool Tip: We already mentioned another useful Adobe Reader alternative called Nitro PDF Reader. You might also want to check that out.

1. Easy to read: Sumatra PDF gives you all the options to arrange the pages for easy reading. In my opinion, the most comfortable is Presentations mode is full screen layout. You can use Zoom to refine the view if someone is visually challenged.

2. Easy navigation: Sumatra PDF keeps it simple with keyboard navigation and toolbar arrows. Learning keyboard shortcuts will make your navigation smoother to some extent. For example, you can open consecutive documents in the same folder by pressing + + Right to switch between documents in the same folder.

3. Bookmark easily: Sumatra PDF allows you to designate specific pages as favorites. It’s a bookmarking feature. Alternatively, you can set Sumatra PDF to remember the point you closed your last file (Remember the settings for each document), so you don’t have to scroll back through the pages. It also displays a read often page the next time you open it.

4. Hyperlink Support: All hyperlinks embedded in PDF documents are supported and opened with your default browser.

5. More: Sumatra PDF gives you full control over what you need to print through the Print dialog box on your operating system. You can directly open your email client and attach the PDF file. The tool also has a search box that helps you find text.

Sumatra PDF is rated as a fast and reliable PDF reader. I would have liked the highlight and annotation features as they are lacking. I can’t test how secure the PDF reader handles documents, but reports say that’s no problem. The bottom line is that Sumatra PDF is very fast and does the basic job well. If you’re not satisfied with the relative weight of Adobe Reader, keep this portable and free eBook/PDF reader by your side.
