Sometimes you don’t choose dark mode, but darkness chooses you. I am referring to dark mode in various popular apps like Chrome. For some users, this feature is activated automatically. A dark mode lover will jump for joy. But for people like me who can’t stand it, we want to disable it immediately. Here we will tell you how to disable dark mode from Chrome in Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone.
Google Chrome is my default browser across devices. I use it regularly to browse the internet. I recently enabled dark mode on Chrome accidental, make the homepage, settings, and more black. Turning it off is not an easy task. So I think others may also be wondering about how to disable dark mode in Chrome. Hence this post.
Let’s see how to get Chrome out of this darkness.
Turn off Dark Mode in Google Chrome on Android
In Chrome on Android Lollipop 5+, dark mode is activated in three ways — from app settings, system-wide theme settings, and battery saver mode. Here’s how to disable it.
1. Change Chrome Theme from Dark to Light
In the first case, you have to disable dark mode in Chrome settings. Here are the steps for the same.
Step 1: Launch the Google Chrome app on your phone.
Step 2: Tap the three-dot icon in the upper right corner and select Settings from the menu.
Step 3: Click on the Theme included in the Basic section. You will find three options — light, dark, and system default. Tap Light.
2. Change the theme of your Android phone to disable Chrome’s Dark Mode
In case you are running Android 10 or later and have enabled dark mode on your phone, Chrome will automatically turn dark if the theme settings in Chrome are kept as the system default. Similarly, if battery saver is enabled with the system default of Chrome theme, Chrome will again go dark. So you need to turn off dark mode on your phone or turn off battery saving mode.
To remove it from your phone, go to Phone Settings > Display. Turn off the switch next to Dark theme.
Tips
To turn off battery saver, go to Phone Settings > Battery. Turn off Battery Saver.
Turn off Dark Mode in Google Chrome on iOS
Google Chrome does not offer dedicated theme settings on iPhone. The dark theme is tied to your iPhone theme settings. If dark mode is enabled on an iPhone running iOS 13 or later, Chrome will turn dark. Therefore, to remove dark mode from Chrome on iOS, you must disable it in iPhone settings.
To do so, open Settings on your iPhone and go to Display & Brightness.
Tap Light in the Appearance section to turn off the dark theme. Open Chrome and it’s back to normal. Check out our dedicated guide to turning off dark mode on iPhone and iPad.
Tip:
Turn off Dark Mode for Chrome on Windows 10
Google Chrome goes dark in two ways on Windows 10 — using system settings and by applying a black theme. Here we will tell you how to deactivate both.
1. Turn off Chrome’s Dark Mode from Windows Settings
Windows 10 supports dark mode for apps. This means that supported apps will turn dark when this setting is enabled. So you need to disable it to remove dark mode from Chrome on Windows. For that, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open Settings on your Windows 10 PC and go to Personalization.
Step 2: Click Colors in the left sidebar.
Step 3: In the Color settings, select Lighting under ‘Choose your color’. That will make both your apps and Windows light up.
However, if you just want apps to turn light without changing the Windows theme, choose Customize under Choose your color. Then check the box next to Lighting under “Choose your default app mode”. Keep ‘Choose your default Windows mode’ according to your preference. Open Chrome and it will have a light theme.
2. Disable Dark Mode from Chrome Themes
A few months ago, Google launched new themes for Chrome. One of them is Just Black which can turn some of your stuff in Chrome into darkness. So to remove the dark mode you have to disable the black theme.
For that, follow these steps:
Step 1: Launch Chrome and click on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner. Select Settings from the menu. Alternatively, use the direct link chrome://settings/ to open the settings.
Step 2: Scroll down and you will find Themes under Appearance section. Click Reset to Defaults. That will revert the theme to the original lightweight version.
Note: Themes in Chrome are linked to your Google account (if signed in
Turn off Dark Mode for Chrome on Mac
Similar to Windows, the Chrome dark theme in macOS is associated with the system-wide dark theme setting on devices running macOS 10.14 Mojave+. So you have to change your Mac’s theme to disable dark mode on Chrome.
For that, follow these steps:
Step 1: Click on the Apple menu and select System Preferences from the menu.
Step 2: Click on General in System Preferences.
Step 3: You will find three options next to Appearance — light, dark, and automatic. Click Light to turn off dark mode. That will change the theme not only for Chrome but your entire Mac.
If you select Automatic (available on macOS Catalina), the dark theme is automatically activated at night. Know the details of how to disable dark mode on macOS.
Can’t disable Dark Mode on Chrome
If after following the steps above you are unable to remove dark mode on Chrome, check out these tips:
1. Turn off Incognito Mode
Incognito mode is dark by default. So you need to check if you are browsing in normal or incognito mode. To do that, look for the incognito icon, which includes glasses and a hat.
On the desktop, you’ll find it in the top right corner. If you’re in incognito mode, close the window and reopen Chrome in normal mode.
On the Chrome mobile app (Android and iPhone), the incognito mode icon appears on the left side of the address bar. If you see it, close the tab and open the tab normally. Know in detail how to disable Chrome’s incognito mode on different platforms.
2. Restore Chrome Settings
On the Chrome desktop, you can reset Chrome settings to disable dark mode. Resetting Chrome settings won’t delete your data, history, or bookmarks. Only extensions and themes will be disabled. Find out what happens when you reset Chrome settings before taking this step.
To reset Chrome settings, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open Chrome Settings by clicking on the three-dot icon in the upper right corner.
Step 2: Click Advanced to show more settings.
Step 3: Scroll to the bottom. Click ‘Restore settings to factory defaults.’ Then click Reset settings to confirm.
Remove Dark Mode in Chrome Only
My life would be hell if dark mode on Chrome was a permanent feature. Thankfully, it can be removed from all devices as shown above. However, as you’ve seen, you need to disable the system-wide setting on some devices to remove it from Chrome. In case you don’t want to do that, see how to disable dark mode on Chrome separately in Windows and macOS.
