How to Permanently Disable Preview Pane in Windows 7 Explorer

Windows Explorer has a couple of cool things that make your work and browsing easier. One of them is the Navigation Pane placed on the left side of the interface. The other two are the Preview Pane and the Details Pane placed on the right and bottom of the interface, respectively. The image below shows the areas in the red and purple boxes.

While these prove useful at times, especially the Preview Pane (since it shows previews of images, videos, etc.), they obviously take up a lot of space on the explorer. Now, of course, you can always enable/disable them temporarily as per your requirement.

The available options are generally as shown in the figure.

But what if you temporarily turn them off and then some other user (of the same computer) turns them back on. Can be a little annoying, right? So why not consider turning these options off permanently so that they disappear from the Layout menu and no other user can enable them without your consent.

Here’s what you need to do. One more thing, you will only be able to do this if you are using one of the Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise editions. Unfortunately, it was a caveat that we couldn’t avoid.

Steps to disable the preview pane permanently

First of all, you need to be logged in as an administrator to be able to make those changes. Then follow below steps:-

Step 1: Launch the Run dialog box (the easiest way to do so is Windows + R). Execute the gpedit.msc command to bring up the Local Group Policy Editor.

Run Gpedit

Step 2: Navigate to User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer -> Explorer Pane.

Windows Components

Step 3: Double click on explorer frame frame to display the options associated with it on the right side of the window.

Step 4: Now double click on the reading option Turn off the Preview Pane and you will be taken to its configuration window.

Turn off the preview pane

If you have radio button Enabled is selected, the option for the Preview Pane is removed from the Layout menu. Because Not configured And Handicappedit still works.

Similarly, you can set your preferences to Turn off the details pane.

Turn off the details pane

Now, when you navigate to Arrange -> Layout you won’t be able to detect options for the Preview Pane or the Details Pane. So there will be no other computer users. Check out the image showing the reduced number of options below.

And this way, you’ll always have maximum space on your Windows explorer without worrying about shared users changing settings.

Conclusion

Wouldn’t it be great to have full control over your computer and set things up your way? People often go to great lengths to set their likes and also complain about other users changing their likes. Well, that’s because you leave scope to do so. Instead, you should do things the main way :).
