Apple’s ecosystem key is real. You need to use Apple hardware to get the best out of Apple services. Over time, however, the company loosened its grip and offered its services on rival platforms. Apple Music on Android and iCloud on Windows are recent examples of current practice. And with the latest iCloud update, Apple is launching iCloud passwords on Windows. Here’s how to use it.
iCloud Keychain is Apple’s built-in password manager shared across the Apple devices you own. It makes for an easy experience to sign in to apps and services.
Before iCloud Passwords came to Windows, one would have to export passwords in a file and then import them using a third-party password manager. That time-consuming process is gone. Now you can easily use and integrate iCloud passwords on Windows and with the default Microsoft Edge browser.
Set up iCloud password on Windows
Apple did not launch a separate application on Windows to allow users to access passwords stored in the iCloud keychain. iCloud Passwords are part of iCloud. You need to use the iCloud app to enable iCloud Passwords on Windows. There is no separate app for it in the Microsoft Store.
Apple added a Password toggle in the iCloud app on Windows.
Set up iCloud and password access on Windows.
Step 1: Open the Microsoft Store app on Windows.
Step 2: Search for iCloud and download the app on your Windows machine.
iCloud weighs about 550 MB on Windows. Use a fast internet connection to download the application on your computer. Since you downloaded the iCloud app from the Microsoft Store, you don’t need to do any installation.
Step 3: Open the iCloud app and sign in with your Apple account credentials.
Apple will ask you to verify your identity by adding a verification code. The company will send you that code on other Apple devices running with the same Apple ID.
Step 4: Enter the verification code and press the Continue button.
That’s it. iCloud home is ready to serve you. You’ll see iCloud Drive, Photos, Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Safari Bookmarks, and of course, Passwords synced to the Windows device.
By default, the Password toggle is enabled and it will ask you to integrate it with the browsers installed on your Windows computer.
Keep the Password toggle on and hit the Apply button at the bottom to apply the changes.
Use iCloud Password App
With the iCloud app installed on Windows, you now have iCloud Passwords enabled as well.
Press the Windows key and search for iCloud Passwords. Open the app and sign in with Windows Hello authentication. If your Windows device lacks Hello biometrics, you can also use a PIN to access iCloud Passwords.
In short, you must set user authentication on your Windows device to access and use iCloud Passwords.
If you haven’t set up such authentication, the app will guide you through setting it up from the Windows Settings app.
In our testing, iCloud Password repeatedly asked us to approve apps from the iCloud app. So we reopened iCloud and re-enabled Passwords.
Open iCloud Passwords again, confirm your identity, and iCloud Passwords will sync data stored from the iCloud Keychain app.
iCloud Passwords App Overview
Surprisingly, Apple nailed the user interface with the iCloud Passwords app on Windows. It uses Microsoft’s fluent design language with a nice blur effect on the sidebar.
Users can add new entries, edit existing ones, copy passwords, and even delete site data from the app.
Unfortunately, we don’t have a password generator on Apple devices. Also missing a dedicated Settings page that allows you to change the auto-lock duration. By default, it is set to about two minutes. You will have to continue to sign in to the app regularly.
Use iCloud Passwords with Microsoft Edge on Windows
A dedicated app is fine, but a browser extension is required when using a password manager. Follow the steps below to install the iCloud Password extension with Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome on Windows.
Step 1: Open the iCloud app on Windows.
Step 2: In the Password section, select Install extension next to the With Microsoft Edge option.
Step 3: Use the Download button to open the Microsoft Edge Add-ons store on the web.
Step 4: Click Get and add the extension to the Edge browser.
Step 5: Select the iCloud Password extension and it will ask for authentication. You should get that code on your Windows machine now because you have the iCloud app set up.
Add the code to enable the iCloud Password extension on Microsoft Edge and you’re ready to use iCloud Passwords to fill in your browser login details.
Integrate iCloud password on Windows
The arrival of iCloud Passwords on Windows could be a boon for someone switching from Mac to Windows. You don’t need to export/import passwords anymore. Instead, set up a Password from the iCloud app, and you’re ready to use iCloud Password on your Windows machine.
