Microsoft Windows provides a handy screenshot key right on the keyboard. Just press the Prt Sc button and take a screenshot. The default location is located in the Screenshots folder in OneDrive on Windows. That suits those who sync every screenshot with OneDrive storage. Luckily, you can change the screenshot location to a different folder in Windows 11.
Windows also saves screenshots in the Pictures folder, which is automatically synced with your OneDrive account. Here’s how you can change the screenshot location and store it only on your computer.
Change screenshot location in Windows 11
You may want to change the location where the screenshots are stored to Documents or any other folder just to keep them handy. Follow the steps below to make changes.
Step 1: Press Windows + E key combination to open File Explorer.
Step 2: Select ‘This PC’ from the left sidebar.
Step 3: Double-click the Pictures folder in the right pane. If you see a cloud icon next to the Pictures folder, it will automatically sync the screenshot with your OneDrive account.
Step 4: Find the Screenshots folder from the list and right click on it.
Step 5: Select Properties from the context menu or use Alt + Enter keys.
Step 6: Select the Location tab at the top.
Step 7: Select Move and it will open the default Screenshot location in Windows 11.
Step 8: Select a new folder or drive as the new location to save the screenshot.
Windows 11 will ask if you want to move all the files from the old location to the new location. You can skip or click Yes to move all previous screenshots to a new folder.
If you’ve set up Google Drive or iCloud on your Windows 11 PC, you can select one of their folders and sync screenshots directly to your preferred cloud storage service.
Change screenshot position with Snipping Tool
The Snipping Tool is another handy way to take screenshots on Windows 11. With the Prt Sc key, you capture the entire screen, including the taskbar, the clock, and even the application menu bar. Most users will choose the Snipping Tool to capture a certain part of the screen.
However, your Snipping Tool will not immediately save the screenshot to a folder. It will just copy the screenshot and provide a popup to add any caption.
Step 1: Whenever you want to take a screenshot, use the Windows + Shift + S key combination and check the Snipping Tool in action.
Step 2: Take a screenshot and it will provide a popup in the notification center. And when you click that, the Snipping Tool will open up on a big screen.
Step 3: Use a marker, pen, crop tool, and ruler to make changes. Tap the Save icon in the upper right corner or use the Windows + S keys to save the screenshot.
Step 4: Snipping Tool will ask you to choose a folder to save the screenshot. After you select a relevant folder, the Snipping Tool application will remember the location and use it to save all future screenshots.
So the next time you press Windows key + S from the edit menu, Snipping Tool will ask for the save location and remember the folder.
Revert screenshot position to default
If you’ve changed your mind and want to rollback your changes to save the screenshot in the original Pictures folder, you can easily do that from the File Manager.
Step 1: Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer on Windows 11.
Step 2: Select the current folder that you are using to save the screenshot.
Step 3: Right-click on the Screenshots folder and select Properties.
Step 4: Go to the Location tab.
Step 5: Select the Restore Defaults button. However, if you deleted the Pictures > Screenshots folder before, the system will ask to create a folder.
Step 6: Click Yes and you have the option to move all screenshots from the existing folder to the default folder.
Step 7: Confirm your decision and return to the original folder to save the screenshot in Windows 11.
Bonus tip: Free up space in the Screenshots folder
If you’re using OneDrive to save screenshots, that quickly fills up space on your computer and OneDrive. You have an option to free up space on your computer if you want to save a copy online.
Step 1: Open File Manager by pressing Windows Key + E and navigate to OneDrive to open the Pictures folder in your main drive as shown above.
Step 2: Find the Screenshots folder and right-click on it.
Step 3: Select the ‘Free up space’ option and the system will delete all saved screenshots from the local storage.
You should only follow this if you’re running low on storage space on your Windows 11 PC.
