A few days ago, when I discussed 5 Chrome add-ons that can really enhance your YouTube experience, I mentioned how YouTube videos help me with cooking and other household activities. Now the point is, since I am a beginner in the art of cooking, I need assistance every step of the way while making a particular recipe.
The worst part – i am using a limited internet connection and hence i download and save these videos to my laptop. Bringing a laptop into the kitchen (especially when the chef is someone like me) is not always a good idea. Of course, I can use my Android to watch videos while I cook, but it’s also not feasible to copy one video after another on the SD card on a daily basis.
The best solution to the aforementioned problem is to stream video from computer to Android. In the process, the videos stay on your computer’s hard disk, but you can cache them and watch them on your Android over Wi-Fi. We will be using a free app called Emit to do the task. So let’s see how it’s done.
Hot Tip: If your home doesn’t have Wi-Fi on, you can create a Wi-Fi router from your laptop. Check out our guide on how you can turn your Laptop into a Hotspot.
Steps to stream video from computer to Android
Step 1: Make sure both your computer and droid are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, then download and install the Emit Android App and the Emit server on your computer. The Emit app is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Step 2: Run the Emit server on your computer and check the Server Running option to start Emit. click Add Dir . Button to add folders containing videos that you want to stream on your Android. If you want to share your iTunes Library, select the corresponding option.
Step 3: Make a note of the local Wi-Fi IP address you connected to. The easiest way to know the local IP address of your computer is to use the ipconfig command on the command prompt.
Step 4: Now launch Emit app on your Android device. If you’re lucky, the app should be able to automatically add your computer as a server, but if that doesn’t happen, press your phone’s settings soft key and select More servers to perform manual tasks. Go on to select Local Server and enter your computer’s Wi-Fi address. The name of the computer can be any alias that will help you remember which computer you are connecting to. This is useful when you have a server running on multiple computers.
Note: If your application cannot connect to the computer, please check if the firewall is blocking Emit’s network access.
Step 5: Once you are connected to the computer, the application will list all the folders shared by the server. Now just navigate to your video and tap it to play.
The videos will play like it’s playing from your SD card but when you try to forward or rewind the video you may experience some lag (due to loading into the buffer). If you are using ad supported version you may see some ads in menu and on video but if you like this app you can use pro version and enjoy your videos ad free.
My judgment
Emit is a great video streaming app for Android. The app supports live streaming and so you don’t have to wait until the video buffer is full for you. It plays almost all regular video files (a few with embedded subtitles) without any hiccups and quality loss.
That’s what I think of Emit, but I’d certainly love to know your views and how it worked for you. Android users, please try and comment.
