How to Remove Clutter From Gmail Design With Gmelius

Gmail is, without a doubt, a leading email service. However, there is a good bit

chaotic

that’s on the look and feel of it if you compare it to desktop email clients. Although Gmail offers customization options through

Gmail Labs

For the minimalists among us, who want to see nothing more than email when they open Gmail in their browser, Gmail has a lot to look forward to.

In my quest to get more interface space and optimize Gmail usage only for my mail, I came across Gmelius.

Gmelius is a great cross-browser extension (currently supporting Chrome, Firefox, and Opera) that lets you customize the look and feel of your Gmail and get rid of all the clutter surrounding it. You can easily remove ads, customize navigation icons, and more. Let’s see what it has in its pocket.

Gmelius option

As you can see in the image above, the additional options allow you to choose what you want and what to remove. You just need to tick the corresponding checkboxes.

Note: Your settings will not be stored for your Gmail profile. The settings will reflect on the browser you have installed and for all of those profiles.

Get more interface space

The best thing here is that you can remove all ads (header, footer and right pane). Now, that would be the best answer to the question “Why these Ads?”, right? ????

Remove the ads

Once the ads run out, you can remove the People widget on the sidebar (I think most people don’t use it). This really makes your inbox spacious.

Alternatively, if you feel the chat pane (showing chat status, availability, chat search, etc.) adds clutter, you can choose to delete individual panes.

Customize Navigation Icons

Navigation icons appear only when you select or open a message. Even then, it’s just icons, which means you sometimes hit the wrong one. With this option, your icons have names and you can also customize their colors.

Customize title

By the title, we mean the Google logo and the search box. Previously, the Google logo was clickable and was the navigation tool to get to the inbox instantly. This isn’t available right now but Gmelius can help you bring it back.

Alternatively, if you rarely use the search bar and don’t want a clickable logo, you can temporarily hide the title. You can make the title auto-expandable and switch between views using Search + Share button is added.

Add a subtle highlight row

Navigating through messages just got a whole lot easier with refined line-marking. For added fun, you can choose a color based on your background theme.

Add attachment icon

Attachment icons are usually represented by a clip symbol and give no clue as to what may be attached inside. Therefore, you may want to enable the feature and learn about attachments by simply looking at the email subject in your inbox. Moreover, you can move them from right to left.

Conclusion

In addition to these, you can play with scrolling options, the look and feel of your messages (uniform look and feel), and more. In my opinion, Gmelius is a must have extension for all Gmail users. I fell in love with this experience and I’m sure you will too. Let us know about it!
