Save Android Game Files to External SD Card (Root Required)

When buying an Android device, if we are having one that mounts an external SD card to hold 32 gigs of data or more, then we don’t even need to consider the internal storage. Well why would you? You can save all your music and videos to an external SD card and save space on the internal SD card for what’s important. However, if you enjoy playing games on your device, it will take you a few days to realize that 8 or 16 internal contracts is not enough.

Sd card game storage

There are many apps on the Play Store that like to store large files on the internal SD card. Take Asphalt or even Temple Run as an example. These apps take up internal SD card space by saving data files and do not provide an option to move them to the external SD card. Even if you try to move these files manually to an external SD card, the app won’t recognize them and will give you a missing file error.

However, if you have a rooted device, you’re in for a treat. Today I will show you how you can move your data files to the external SD card and create a symbolic link to the internal SD card. This way you will be able to install more games on your Android device while keeping the internal SD card space free.

Note: Make sure you are using a Class 10 memory card. One may face slow game load times on a Class 4 memory card.

Use FolderMount to create folder links

So to get started, install an app called FolderMount on your device and launch it. The first time you install the app, it will ask you for root permission. Accept the app as a trusted app and save the settings. Once that’s done, the app will patch your system files, and the process may need a restart.

After the device reboots, open the app again and it will show you the home screen with the list of pairs. You can start by creating a new pair, but the app also has auto-detection built-in. Open the sidebar and select the option App Analyzer. Here you will find a list of apps installed on your device as well as OBB and data files on the SD card.

When you tap on any of the apps, it will list the Data and OBB file locations and give you the option to create a folder pair. Tap option Create pairs and the app will ask you if you need the auto-generated destination folder. I trust the app and check the option automatically. Finally, check the option To exclude, to expel from media scan (ignore duplicates for Album) and save the settings.

Mount folder 7

The files from the source (internal SD card) will be moved to the destination folder (external card). It may take some time depending on the volume of data. Once done, just open folder folder list on the app and pin the created folder folder. This will simulate a virtual link folder on the internal SD card while all the files are actually stored on the external card.

Conclusion

So that’s how you can save space on your internal SD card and run all your games and other apps from the external SD card. Just make sure you use a high speed SD card, otherwise you may experience lag while playing the game.
