How to Customize Folder Scanning Preferences in Picasa

I’m a fan of the Picasa desktop app and have been using it for quite some time. Picasa is not only an excellent photo editor and manager, but also comes with an excellent viewer.

If you have ever worked on Picasa, you must have noticed the two options it offers its users after a fresh install. Options are to allow Picasa to limit its scanning to the My Documents folder, or to allow complete control over all photos in your entire hard disk.

Now if all your photos are limited to My Pictures folder choosing the first option will solve the problem, but if you have a scattered collection of photos then you have to choose the second option.

However, giving Picasa full control over all folders can sometimes be a bit annoying, and the only remedy for this is to customize the folders scanned by Picasa.

Customize Folder Scanner

Step 1: Launch Picasa and click Tools -> Folder Manager

Folder Manager

Step 2: Now on the left side, in the folder manager, you will see a list of all your computer’s folders. You can now select any folder and perform one of the following three actions on it.

Folder Scan

Scan Once: You can enable this option to scan the folder only once. This option will add all photos and videos from the folder to that particular instance. However, in the future if you add or remove any file from the folder, that file will not be reflected in Picasa.

Remove from Picasa: As the name suggests, the folder will be permanently excluded from the Picasa library.

Always Scan: This privileged folder will be scanned in real time as long as Picasa is running in the background. Any addition or deletion of media files will be reflected in Picasa immediately.

You’ll also see a section called viewed folders. It usually contains a library and is similar to the Scan Always property.

Step 3: If you want to tag faces while scanning, you can enable the Face Detection option.

Step 4: The last step, press the Ok button.

Note: You can also right-click a specific folder in Picasa and select Remove from Picasa to exclude that folder.

So from now on, you can have full control over the folders (and photos) you want Picasa to import.
