As good as the Steam Deck is, its power is limiting. However, if you already own a good gaming PC or a PS5, did you know you can enjoy your favorite PC and PS5 on the Deck? Remote Play is a feature on PC and PS5 that allows you to stream games to other devices, such as your Steam Deck.
In this guide, we’ll show you how to use Remote Play on your Steam Deck to play PC or PS5 games. Whether sitting in a different room, lying on your bed, or at a coffee shop, you can enjoy Remote Play gaming on your Steam Deck as long as you have an internet connection. So, let’s get to it.
How to Enable Remote Play on a PC
Remote Play for PC opens up a world of possibilities. This includes using your Steam Deck to enjoy playing your PC games on the go. As long as your PC and Steam Deck are logged in to the same account and connected to the internet, you can reap the benefits of Remote Play.
But first, you have to ensure your PC is ready for Remote Play. Here’s how to do that.
Step 1: Launch the Steam client on your PC.
Step 2: Now, click on the Steam icon in the top left corner of the window and click on Settings.
Step 3: In the Steam Settings window, click on Remote Play from the left sidebar.
Step 4: Turn on the toggle for ‘Enable Remote Play’. Remote Play is now enabled on your gaming PC.
Step 5: However, it’s best to optimize the gameplay for your Steam Deck. To do that, scroll down to the ‘Advanced Streaming Options’ and turn on the toggle for ‘Enable Advanced Host Options’.
Step 6: Enable the toggle for ‘Change desktop resolution to match streaming client’.
This way, your PC will render at 1280 x 800 resolution, the same as your Steam Deck. As a result, your PC won’t be wasting resources by rendering a higher-quality image only to be compressed over the network. This will also result in better performance.
How to Stream Games From PC to Steam Deck
Now that your PC is ready for Remote Play, download the game on it that you wish to play on your Steam Deck. Once done, it’s time to play the games on your Steam Deck. Here’s how to go about it.
Step 1: Press the Steam button on your Steam Deck. In the quick access menu, select Settings.
Step 2: Select Remote Play from the left sidebar.
Step 3: Now, turn on the toggle for ‘Enable Remote Play’.
Now, your Steam Deck should automatically link to other devices, including your PC, as long as you’re logged in with the same Steam account.
Step 4: Once done, press the Steam button on your Steam Deck again. Now, select Library.
Step 5: Inside your library, select the game you wish to stream from your PC.
For this guide, we’ll be using Cyberpunk 2077. As you can see, the game isn’t installed on our Steam Deck.
Step 6: Now, tap on the drop-down arrow next to the Install button.
Step 7: In the new menu, you should see a list of devices logged in using your Steam credentials. Your gaming PC should also show up here. Tap on that to switch to it.
Step 8: The Install button should now change to ‘Stream’. Tap on it to start streaming your game using Remote Play.
Step 9: You should get a message explaining Remote Play. Tap on OK to proceed.
And that’s it. Your game should be running on the Steam Deck.
Apart from Cyberpunk 2077, a wide library of games on Steam supports Remote Play. You can check out Valve’s official store page for that or find out which games are compatible with the Steam Deck.
How to Enable Remote Play on PS5
If you’re a PS5 owner, you can stream your favorite console games to your Steam Deck. However, there’s no official way to go about it, so we’ll have to use third-party tools. First up, set up your PS5 to stream games to the Steam Deck.
Here’s how to do that.
Note: Before moving on to the steps, ensure your PS5 is connected to the internet. Ideally, we recommend using an ethernet cable for gaming for the best performance and low latency.
Step 1: On your PlayStation 5, launch the Settings app from the home screen. You can do this by highlighting the gear icon in the top-right corner and pressing X on your PS5 controller.
Step 2: Now, switch to System Settings.
Step 3: Go to the Remote Play section. Now, enable the toggle for ‘Enable Remote Play’.
And that’s it. Your PS5 is now ready for Remote Play. However, to ensure that your PS5 stays connected while streaming games to the Steam Deck, you should enable a couple of other settings.
Step 4: Go to the Power Savings tab and select ‘Features Available in Rest Mode’.
Step 5: Now, enable the toggles for ‘Stay Connected to the Internet’ and ‘Turning on PS5 from Network’.
Connect PS5 to Steam Deck Using Chiaki
Now that your PS5 is ready for Remote Play, it’s time to start the process on the Steam Deck. There are several things to keep in mind, though. First off, unlike a PC, PS5’s Remote Play only works as long as the console and the Steam Deck are on the same network.
Secondly, to connect to the PS5, we’ll use an open-source tool called Chiaki. However, to execute it on the Steam Deck, we must enter commands inside the Terminal. As such, we’d strongly recommend using a keyboard with the Steam Deck. You can also pair Bluetooth accessories to the Steam Deck for easier use.
Once done, here’s how to go about it. We have divided the steps into two parts. One discusses installing the Chiaki app, followed by connecting Steam Deck to PS5. Follow along.
Part 1: Install the Chiaki App
Step 1: To install Chiaki on your Steam Deck, switch to the Desktop Mode. To do this, press the power button on the system’s top and select Switch To Desktop.
Step 2: Now, launch the Discover app. It’s a marketplace to install apps onto your Deck.
Step 3: Search for ‘Chiaki’ in the search bar. Alternatively, you can open this website on your Steam Deck and click the button below.
Step 4: Click on Install. This will download and install the Chiaki app on your Steam Deck.
Part 2: Connect Steam to PS5 Using the Chiaki App
Step 5: Now, launch the Chiaki app. You should see a PS5 icon indicating it can detect the PS5 on the same network as the Steam Deck.
Step 6: Now that Chiaki is installed, register it with your PS5. To do that, navigate to Applications Launcher > System > Konsole.
Step 7: Inside Konsole, type or copy-paste the below codes individually. Each command will take time to process, after which you can enter the next command.
curl https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py > get-pip.py && python3 get-pip.py
python3 -m pip install requests
curl https://git.sr.ht/~thestr4ng3r/chiaki/blob/master/scripts/psn-account-id.py > psn-account-id.py
python3 psn-account-id.py
Step 8: Once done, you’ll see a link inside the Konsole window. Right-click on it and select ‘Open Link’.
Step 9: The link should take you to the login page. Log in with your PSN credentials and press Enter.
Step 10: Once done, you should get a new page reading ‘redirect’. Copy the URL.
Step 11: Paste the copied URL inside the Konsole window and press Enter.
Step 12: Copy the code stating your account ID number.
Step 13: Copy your account ID number. Next, launch the Chiaki app and click on the PlayStation icon.
Step 14: Enter the account ID number you copied into the ‘PSN Account-ID (base64)’ field in the Register Console window.
Step 15: You’ll also require a PIN to log in. This will be provided by your PS5. To find it, head to Settings > System > Remote Play > Link Device. Your PS5 should show a numeric code to set up Remote Play.
Step 16: Enter the code into the PIN field and press Register.
And that’s it. You should get a pop-up saying your PS5 console has successfully registered with Chiaki.
Use Chiaki to Play PS5 Games on Steam Deck
With Chiaki set up on your Steam Deck, you can easily play PS5 games on your Steam Deck with the help of Remote Play. However, this will work while in the Desktop Mode. To use Chiaki inside the Gaming Mode, you must first add it as a Non-Steam Game. Here’s how to do that.
Step 1: While in the Desktop Mode, launch the Steam application.
Step 2: Click on the ‘Add a Game’ option in the bottom-left corner and select ‘Add a Non-Steam Game’.
Step 3: Now, check the box for Chiaki. Then click on ‘Add Selected Programs’.
This will add Chiaki as a game and allow you to enjoy it in the Gaming Mode.
Step 4: Now, switch to the Gaming Mode on your Steam Deck and press the Steam button. Go to Library.
Step 5: Press R1 on your Steam Deck and tap on Chiaki to open the app page.
Step 6: Finally, tap on Play to launch it.
And that’s it. You can now stream your PS5 onto your Steam Deck, thanks to Remote Play.
