Backup/Sync Firefox Bookmarks, Passwords, Open Tabs With Firefox Sync

Today, we use browsers on many devices…from desktop computers to PDAs. Carrying bookmarks and other browser data across all these devices saves us from duplicating our data and efforts. That’s why if you’re a Firefox fan, you’ll appreciate the default Firefox Sync tool that helps you back up and synchronize your bookmarks, history, passwords, and open tabs with another copy of Firefox.

Firefox Sync stores all the information mentioned above securely on its server, and when you connect to it from some other computer, you can easily sync your Firefox data from there. You don’t have to move around with all that useful data in your head or in some other third-party service. Firefox Sync is the built-in browser synchronization solution if you always use multiple computers and devices like Android and iPhone.

How to set up Firefox Sync

Firefox Sync is set up from the Sync tab accessed from the Firefox button (Tools in Windows XP) – Preferences – Sync tab. The next few steps are simple enough.

1. As a first time user, you will have to set up a new account. As the screen below shows, you can choose to store your synced data in the Firefox server or choose a custom server (for example, a corporate server).

2. Clicking Sync Options opens the following screen where you can select or deselect what you want to transfer to other computers.

3. This screen is important because it generates the Sync key, which is absolutely necessary to access Sync on other machines. The Sync Key is used to encrypt your data before it is sent to the Mozilla server. So keep it in a safe place.

4. Set up the required CAPTCHA then your synced account is ready. As you can see, the Options dialog box gives you some settings to configure if you want. You can manage your data by opting out of some items and offloading the server; you can retrieve your Sync key (or create a new one) or change your password; and you can also choose to unlink a specific device from the server.

Syncing data across devices like Android and iPhone through the Firefox browser enhances productivity and maintains the integrity of the data you’ve worked so hard on over the years. Are you using Firefox Sync to manage your browsing data?
