Goodreads, a Great Way to Track Books and Get Recommendations

Introducing books used to be a task that was best left to the librarians and booksellers in the corner of the store. Not anymore, because online recommendation engines have taken over. And they have brought together a community of book lovers to share each other’s interests.

Goodreads is definitely one of the best out there. You might say, what’s wrong with Amazon? I won’t say anything; but sometimes I don’t like to rely solely on sales figures when evaluating a book. I would rather believe words. Goodreads is the basis for what you should definitely read now and next.

Fill your bookshelf with books

Goodreads01

Goodreads gives you an intuitive bookshelf to jot down all the books you’ve read, are reading, or want to read. You can search for books using the site’s search engine, or add books recommended by friends.

You can even add books that Goodreads might not have in the catalog, even though they are few. You can create different bookshelves to hold all your books. Goodreads also uses Google to give you a preview of a book.

Don’t judge a book by its cover

Clicking on a thumbnail book cover opens a single page that tells you all about the book. You can read what other Goodreads members think about the book, why they recommend it, information about other editions, and where to buy a copy of the book. However, the most invaluable detail to me are the other ‘similar’ titles mentioned below Readers also enjoy. The titles suggested here are a starting point to explore more books.

Let the community know that you are a book lover

Exact book discovery and recommendations also depend on the effort you put into your own book collection at Goodreads. Build your bookshelf with all the books you’ve read or want to read. It’s a great tool for making your reading wish list. Boost user engagement by giving your rating to the book and starting a discussion about the title or author.

Find new and interesting books

We’ve seen several ways to discover new books to read (search bar, Readers love too). The Recommendations page takes you to a few other Goodreads that may be of interest to you.

The Discover Tool gives you much more – listed with feature list; Popular books published in the month; and of course, the Goodreads email newsletter gives you an overview of all the best of Goodreads.

Goodreads isn’t all about turning pages. There’s an entire section devoted to a collection of great quotes (try it out Guess the quote games), conundrums and puzzles. Finally, if you love books, you won’t hesitate to mingle with other members of the community. Try the ‘near me’ link to make new friends via books. It’s a shared love after all.
