An age-old problem with watching TV is that everyone around you has to hear what you’re watching. It could be a problem for you or it could very well be a problem for them. Subtitles sometimes alleviate the problem, but the experience isn’t the same as hearing voices and expressions, especially for music.

So the question is how to be able to watch your favorite TV shows directly on your TV in a way that no one else can hear? Get ready, because we have not one but three different solutions, all easy and affordable…and one even completely free.
Using Unity
Tunity is a free app for iOS and Android, nothing futuristic and weird, but it works. Tunity helps you hold your smartphone to the live TV channel you’re watching. It scans for just a few seconds to determine which channel is on, then transmits the synced audio to your phone so you can listen.
Then you just need to mute the TV and plug your headphones into your phone. It works beautifully. If there is a problem with audio syncing and I have had some problems, you can fine-tune the sync by fast forward or rewind bit by bit until it matches the TV perfectly.

Buy wireless TV headphones
If TV listening problems are a problem you often encounter at home, you should probably invest in some wireless TV headphones. They are designed to stream audio from your television directly to your headphones.

As usual with these products, you’ll have to fiddle with the receiver at first to get a clear signal from the TV but once you’ve done that, you’ll be fine.
A quick Amazon search should get you a few solid options. You can always buy the set from Jelly Comb for $24.99, or buy TV Ears’ nearly $100 more premium mugs.
Get a Roku
The Roku 3 and Roku 4, the premium models of the streaming set-top box, have headphone support. The included headphones plug right into the remote so you can watch TV comfortably. In fact, it can work with any headset that fits the 3.5mm headphone jack, so feel free to use your own.

The only downside is that to watch TV and listen to audio in private, you need to watch something on the Roku. The service has a ton of content available, but this still means you won’t be able to watch live TV as part of your cable subscription.
The Roku 3 costs $99.99 and the Roku 4, which supports 4K TVs, costs $129.99.
